SANGKURIANG
Dayang Sumbi is a powerful woman descended from Raja Sungging Perbangkara. Her face was
beautiful and at that time she rejected proposals from the men she often received. One time, while
isolating himself with his dog, Tumang, in the forest. The spool of sewing thread fell.
Dayang Sumbi then unconsciously made a statement, whoever could get the roll of thread, if she
was a woman, would be made her brother. However, if it is a man, he will be made husband.
Unexpectedly, Tumang, his pet dog, took the scroll. And because she had promised, Dayang
Sumbi finally married Tumang. Tumang is actually the incarnation of a god who transformed into a
dog. From that marriage, a child was born who was named Sangkuriang.
One day when Sangkuriang wanted to hunt with Tumang, he told Tumang to chase the female pig
Wayung, who was none other than Dayang Sumbi’s mother. Because he did not obey Sangkuriang’s
orders, Tumang was killed by Sangkuriang. Sangkuriang took Tumang’s heart and gave it to his
mother, Dayang Sumbi, to cook and eat.
Knowing that what he had eaten was Tumang’s liver, his anger peaked. Immediately, Sangkuriang
was hit on the head until he was injured and thrown out of his residence. Time continued to pass,
until Sangkuriang grew into a dashing and handsome man. Who knows how long he wandered until
without realizing it, Sangkuriang returned to the forest where he came from. He met a beautiful
woman who was none other than Dayang Sumbi.
At first Dayang Sumbi didn’t know it was her child. Both of them also like each other. However,
once she knew and realized that the man who wanted to marry her was Sangkuriang, she was even
more shocked. As a result, he gave one condition, Sangkuriang had to be able to make a lake and a
boat and dam the Citarum river in one night.
Sangkuriang agreed to these requirements because he had studied and become a powerful
mandraguna person. As a result, Sangkuriang was able to fulfill the requirements given to him by
Dayang Sumbi with the help of guriang (spiritual beings).
After midnight the dam was almost finished. But Dayang Sumbi begged Sang Hyang Tunggal so
that Sangkuriang’s intentions would not be carried out. Dayang Sumbi then spread strands of boeh
rarang cloth (white cloth she had woven) on top of the hill in the east, so that the white cloth
appeared to glow like dawn breaking on the eastern horizon. Meanwhile he repeatedly hit the pestle
into the mortar, as if he was pounding rice.
The guriang spirits under Sangkuriang's men were frightened because they thought it was
starting to be morning, so they ran and disappeared into the ground. Thus the construction of the
dam was not completed. Dayang also succeeded in making Sangkuriang angry. He kicked the half-
finished boat with all his might and it rolled face down until finally the name Tangkuban Parahu
appeared.
The moral message that can be learned is to be honest because honesty will bring goodness and
happiness in the future. Cheating will harm yourself and can bring disaster to yourself or others.
