III. Problem Presented

Angel is seeking medical assistance for her daughter, who has been diagnosed with bronchial
asthma. This condition has caused her child to experience troubled sleeping, shortness of breath,
coughing, flu symptoms, and chest pain. Although her partner has a job, his income is still inadequate
for their daily needs, especially for her daughter's medications. As a result, Angel is facing financial
difficulties.

IV. Background Information

A. The Client

Angel Andag, a 19-year-old, was born on February 21, 2005. Currently residents in
Purok Malaya, Barangay Rizal 3, Banga, South Cotabato, she takes pride in her cultural
heritage and identifies as a Baptist. Though she faced immense challenges early in life,
including abuse from her uncle at the age of 15, Angel’s resilience shines through. This
traumatic experience has profoundly affected her emotional well-being but has not diminished
her spirit.

At 17, Angel found herself navigating the complexities of teenage motherhood, a

situation that tested her strength further. While she did not complete her high school education
after attending Rizal National High School, she remains determined to create a better future for

herself and her child. Her love for music provides her solace and serves as an emotional
outlet, helping her cope with life's difficulties.

Despite the adversities she has faced, including the burdens of her past, Angel
embodies hope and determination. She continually strives to overcome obstacles, driven by
the desire to provide a brighter path for her child. Her journey reflects not just the challenges of
young motherhood but also the strength of her character and the unwavering commitment to
rise above her circumstances. Angel Andag’s story is a testament to the power of resilience
and the pursuit of a better life against all odds.

B. The Family

Angel Andag comes from a complex family environment. At 19 years old, she is
currently living with her partner, Bert Awan, who is 25 years old and works as a laborer. Their
relationship is described as a live-in partnership, reflecting a shared commitment to raising
their young daughter, Azael, who is just one year old. Angel's family composition highlights
both the challenges and strengths they face together. Bert's daily income of 5,000 pesos is
essential for their household, but it falls short of covering all their daily needs, particularly the
costs associated with Azael's medical care for her bronchial asthma. This financial strain
underscores the difficulties faced by young families in the region, especially those dealing with
health issues. Her background is further complicated by her early experiences of trauma and
resilience. Raised in a challenging environment, she endured abuse at the hands of a family
member, which has had a lasting impact on her emotional well-being. However, her
experiences have also instilled a deep sense of determination in her to create a stable and
nurturing environment for her daughter.
Despite her unfinished education, Angel demonstrates a commitment to personal
growth and healing, seeking to build a better future for her family. The support system within
her cultural community, alongside her own resilience and love for music, plays a crucial role in
her ability to cope with the difficulties she faces as a young mother. In summary, Angel's family
background reflects a blend of hardship and hope. Her journey as a young mother navigating
financial challenges, health concerns, and personal trauma speaks to her strength and
determination to provide for her daughter and overcome the obstacles in their path.

C. Community and Environment:

Angel Andag resides in a small, modest house constructed primarily of bamboo, with a
concrete floor that provides a bit more stability. The home is equipped with only a few
appliances, reflecting their limited financial resources. Their water supply comes from a nearby
well, a common practice in rural areas, which often requires extra effort for daily access.
The family lives on land owned by Bert Awan’s parents, which adds a layer of support
but also indicates their reliance on family for housing stability. The community is characterized
by its agricultural backdrop, with many families, including Angel's, earning their income from
farming activities. This environment fosters a close-knit community where many rely on the
land for their livelihood.

Conveniently located, Angel's home is within walking distance of essential services,

including the health center and the barangay hall. This proximity allows her to seek medical
assistance for her daughter more easily, despite the financial challenges they face. The area is
primarily farmland, which not only shapes the local economy but also influences the daily lives
of the residents, who often work in the fields.
Overall, Angel's community is defined by its agricultural roots, familial connections, and
a supportive, albeit economically challenged, environment. This backdrop plays a crucial role
in their daily lives, impacting both their struggles and their resilience as they navigate the
challenges of young parenthood.

V. Assessment Statement
Angel Andag is a resilient 19-year-old mother who embodies determination and hope, despite
facing significant challenges as a young parent in a rural community. Her story reflects the
complexities of navigating motherhood while managing financial difficulties and personal trauma.
Living in a small bamboo house with limited resources, Angel's daily life is a testament to her strength
as she strives to provide a better future for her one-year-old daughter, Azael.
Angel’s strengths lie in her resilience and commitment to her daughter’s well-being. She has
shown remarkable tenacity in the face of adversity, particularly in her desire to create a nurturing
environment for Azael, despite the financial constraints they face. Her connection to her Tboli
heritage instills a sense of identity and pride, which can serve as a source of strength and community
support. The familial bond with her partner, Bert Awan, who works as a laborer, further enhances her
support system, allowing them to share responsibilities in parenting and daily tasks. Moreover,
Angel's love for music provides her with a vital emotional outlet. Engaging with music helps her cope
with stress and anxiety, allowing her to express her feelings and maintain a sense of joy amidst the
challenges. This passion not only enriches her life but can also be a means to connect with others,
fostering community relationships that can be beneficial for her and Azael.
Despite her strengths, Angel faces considerable weaknesses that hinder her progress.
Financial instability is a significant barrier; with Bert's modest income as a laborer, they struggle to
meet daily needs and afford Azael's necessary medical care for her bronchial asthma. This financial
strain can lead to increased stress and anxiety, impacting Angel's mental health and parenting
capabilities. Additionally, Angel's unfinished education poses a long-term challenge. Without a high
school diploma, her employment prospects are limited, which perpetuates the cycle of poverty and
restricts her ability to provide a stable future for her child. The trauma she experienced in her
adolescence—particularly the abuse from her uncle—continues to affect her emotional well-being.
This unresolved trauma can influence her interactions with Azael, potentially leading to difficulties in
establishing healthy parent-child dynamics.

From a professional perspective, it is crucial to recognize Angel’s resilience while also

addressing the systemic barriers she faces. Supportive interventions are essential for helping her
navigate her challenges. Access to healthcare services, especially for Azael’s asthma management,
must be prioritized to ensure the child’s health and well-being. Additionally, financial assistance
programs, such as food and medical subsidies, can alleviate some of the immediate stressors related
to their financial situation. Educational opportunities should also be explored. Providing Angel with
access to adult education programs or vocational training can empower her to enhance her skills and
improve her employment prospects. This, in turn, would contribute to greater financial stability for
their family. Furthermore, mental health support services should be made available to help Angel
process her trauma and develop coping strategies, ultimately fostering a healthier environment for
both her and Azael.

Applying Ecological Systems Theory, it is evident that Angel's circumstances are influenced by
multiple layers of her environment. These layers include her immediate family dynamics, the broader
community context, and socio-economic factors that intersect to shape her experiences. The
microsystem involves her direct interactions with her partner, child, and extended family, which
provide essential emotional and practical support. The mesosystem encompasses the connections
between these relationships and community resources, such as the health center and local
organizations that can offer assistance. The exosystem includes broader economic conditions that
impact job availability and income levels in their agricultural community, while the macrosystem
encompasses societal attitudes towards young mothers and the Tboli tribe, which can affect access
to resources and opportunities. Understanding these interconnected systems allows for a
comprehensive assessment of Angel's needs and strengths, emphasizing the importance of
community resources and support networks in enhancing her family's quality of life. By addressing
both personal and systemic challenges, we can foster an environment that promotes Angel's growth
and her daughter’s health and development. A multi-faceted approach that integrates these
ecological layers will be crucial in guiding them toward a more stable and fulfilling future. Such
strategies could include community engagement initiatives that connect families with available
resources, as well as advocacy for policies that support young mothers and vulnerable populations in
rural settings. Through these efforts, we can help create a more supportive and empowering
environment for Angel and Azael, ultimately breaking the cycle of poverty and trauma that they
currently face.

VII. Recommendation

To enhance Angel Andag's overall well-being and stability, it is essential to ensure

continuous access to comprehensive healthcare services for both her and her daughter, Azael.
This includes regular check-ups and necessary medications for Azael’s bronchial asthma,
which can be facilitated through enrollment in local health programs. Additionally, providing
Angel with opportunities for adult education or vocational training will empower her to improve
her employment prospects and achieve financial independence. Mental health support should
also be prioritized, as counseling services can help Angel address past trauma and develop
coping strategies for her emotional well-being. Community engagement initiatives, such as
workshops and support groups focused on parenting and health management, can foster a
supportive network among young mothers and facilitate the sharing of resources. Lastly,
advocating for financial assistance programs from governmental and non-governmental
organizations will be crucial in alleviating the financial pressures they face. By implementing
these recommendations, we can create a more supportive environment that promotes health,
stability, and long-term well-being for Angel and Azael.
