UNDERSTANDING HAZARDS AND

DISASTERS
What is Disaster?
- damage of properties, disruption of life.
- disruption to the functioning of the community.

HAZARD
- something that is dangerous and likely to cause damage.

CAPACITY
- strengths, attributes, and resources available within a community

Philippines is located on the pacific ring of fire, that's why we mostly have earthquakes
When there is earthquake, there is also tsunami

TSUNAMI
- A tsunami is a catastrophic ocean wave, usually caused by a submarine earthquake, an
underwater or coastal landslide, or a volcanic eruption.

TYPHOON OR HURRICANE or CYCLONE- 20 TYPHOONS A YEAR IN THE


PHILIPPINES

a strong wind in a desert carrying a large amount of sand.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER FLOODS AND EARTHQUAKES

WHAT TO DO BEFORE TYPHOON?


- always be updated on the news.
- be alert, watch out for warnings or call for evacuation.
- first evacuation: we need to evacuate when ordered.
- in case of emergency, bring your "go bag" (bring own food, water, money, first-aid supplies, phone is charge to call on authorities)
- check homes if it's in good condition.
- discuss your evacuation plan with your family. (evacuation route)

WHEN YOU'RE IN YOUR HOME


- keep a lot of waters in your containers.
- if you're home is safe from the flood

DURING THE TYPHOON


- remain calm, so that you can think rationally.
- stay indoors at all times.
- kids, elderly, pregnant women should be the priority.
- turn off electrical power.
- check phone battery and any updates on the typhoon.
- if you're given time to evacuate, you evacuate.
- go to higher ground.
- bring flashlight so that rescuers can easily spotlight you.

- avoid using candles, use flashlight

AFTER THE TYPHOON


BEFORE TURNING IN ELECTRICAL POWER

- make sure it's not wet


- avoid drinking on tap waters

WHAT TO DO ON EARTHQUAKE?
BEFORE
- be knowledgeable about earthquake plan
- evacuation drill
- plan with your family
- be knowledgeable about evacuating
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST
- know how to use fire extinguisher
- GO BAG should be in our doors (includes, food, water, flashlight, cosmetic mirror, and important things to bring)
- turn off gas when not use, when there's ground shaking- it'll burn your house.
- furniture should be anchored to the wall
- hanging objects should be check such as chandelier

DURING
- keep calm
- do the duck, cover, and hold
- hide on sturdy tables, door jams, or post of the house (strongest parts of the house)
- when you're outside in your house, you should be far from falling objects
- avoid electricity post when you're outside
- when you're in your car, you stop and see to it that you're not in a slope (especially when there's landslide)
- use stairs, not elevators
- when you're in a building, check on the evacuation plan
- stay out of damage buildings, be careful
- stay away from beaches to avoid tsunami

AFTER
- check yourself and others for an injury and you should know first-aid
- use phone for emergencies
- expect aftershocks
- move to designated temporary shelters; don't go anywhere
- wait for authorities and safety officers to do the job in checking your designated rooms
IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO BEING A VOLUNTEER ON OUR COMMUNITY

- knows how to make an evacuation drill

ALARM PHASE: see to it that community people and family (buzzer or bell)
- continuous bell for one minute, that is ground shaking.
RESPONSE: do duck, cover, and hold

EVACUATION PHASE- body-body system, go out the room on a single file

ASSEMBLY PHASE: line on the designated area, head-count

EVACUATION DRILL= committees (exit monitors- the one who guides, floor leaders
and searcher- last person to go out the building)
- assembly area is ready for first-aid
