Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
Nha Nhac, meaning “elegant music”, refers to a wide range of musical and dance styles performed at the
Vietnamese royal court from the fifteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Nha Nhac was generally performed at
the opening and closing of ceremonies associated with anniversaries, religious holidays, funerals and so on.
Among the numerous musical genres that developed in Viet Nam, only Nha Nhac is popular on a nationwide
scale and has strong links with the traditions of other East Asian countries. During Nha Nhac performances,
there were numerous singers, dancers and musicians dressed in gorgeous costumes. Large-scale orchestras
included a drum section and many other types of instruments like wind and string instruments. All performers
had to maintain a high level of concentration because they were expected to follow each step of the ritual
carefully.
Nha Nhac developed during the Le Dynasty (1427-1788) and reached the peak under the Nguyen
Dynasty (1802-1945). As a symbol of the dynasty’s power and longevity, Nha Nhac became an essential part of
the court’s many ceremonies. However, the role of Nha Nhac was not limited to musical accompaniment for
court rituals: it also provided a means of communicating with and showing respect to the gods and kings as well
as providing knowledge about nature and the universe.
The fall of the monarchy and the decades of war in 20 th century seriously threatened the survival of Nha
Nhac and made this musical tradition lose its original function. However, the few surviving former court
musicians continue to work to keep the tradition alive. Certain forms of Nha Nhac have been maintained in
popular rituals and religious ceremonies and become a source of inspiration for contemporary Vietnamese
music.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following questions.
Teenagers love music. They, specifically, attach meaning to and take aspects of their identity from
music. This is not surprising that music holds so much meaning for today’s teens.
Music creates a much needed sense of belonging in the lives of teenagers. Teenagers are known for
feeling isolated from society and friends. Music, as an art form, can help them express the feelings of
frustration that come with feeling isolated. Listening to music can also give teens the chance to feel connected
to musicians and other fans of specific musicians.
Music is a well-known tool for stress relief. Many people actively turn to music as a coping strategy
when processing stress or sadness, because it helps shut out the noise of the world and the noise inside our
heads. Furthermore, music is increasingly being used as a form of therapy, and music therapy has existed for
centuries. Teenagers, especially those going through puberty, conflicts with friends, or the college process, are
under a high amount of stress. Listening to music has been seen to help teens process or release difficult
emotions in a healthy way.
Experiences tend to be very different depending on race or ethnicity. Music provides the opportunity for
teens of all races and ethnicities to share a common bond and learn about each other’s cultures and
backgrounds. For instance, much of the Rap and R&B genres originated in Black culture, and many of the
prominent performers and names in those genres are Black. Music is also usually very personal to the

10
experience of the artist, so through those things, music can be used as an educational tool for teenagers to learn
about backgrounds differing from theirs.
Music can also provide teenagers with a skill or hobby that is special to them, which can help further
build identity and give teens something to be proud of during a period of life that is often characterized by low
self-confidence. Music is an incredibly powerful tool that can be accessed and appreciated by people of all ages
and backgrounds.

Contaminated water and poor sanitation are linked to transmission of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea,
dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio. Absent, inadequate, or inappropriately managed water and sanitation
services expose individuals to preventable health risks. This is particularly the case in health care facilities
where both patients and staff are placed at additional risk of infection and disease when water, sanitation and
hygiene services are lacking. Globally, 15% of patients develop an infection during a hospital stay, with the
proportion much greater in low-income countries.
Inadequate management of urban, industrial and agricultural wastewater means the drinking-water of
hundreds of millions of people is dangerously contaminated or chemically polluted. Natural presence of
chemicals, particularly in groundwater, can also be of health significance, including arsenic and fluoride, while
other chemicals, such as lead, may be elevated in drinking-water as a result of leaching from water supply
components in contact with drinking-water.
Some 829,000 people are estimated to die each year from diarrhea as a result of unsafe drinking-water,
sanitation and hand hygiene. Yet diarrhea is largely preventable, and the deaths of 297,000 children aged under
5 years could be avoided each year if these risk factors were addressed. Where water is not readily available,
people may decide handwashing is not a priority, thereby adding to the likelihood of diarrhea and other
diseases.
Diarrhea is the most widely known disease linked to contaminated food and water but there are other
hazards. In 2017, over 220 million people required preventative treatment for schistosomiasis - an acute and
chronic disease caused by parasitic worms contracted through exposure to infested water.
In many parts of the world, insects that live or breed in water carry and transmit diseases such as dengue
fever. Some of these insects, known as vectors, breed in clean, rather than dirty water, and household drinking
water containers can serve as breeding grounds. The simple intervention of covering water storage containers
can reduce vector breeding and may also reduce faecal contamination of water at the household level.

American Idol was shown for the first time on television in January 2002. At that time, there were many movies
and TV series, but no reality competitions on TV. The participants in this programme are ordinary people who
the audience can really identify with.
First, judges travel all around America in search of the best singers and bring them to Hollywood. Twenty-four
to thirty-six participants are then chosen to go on to the next stages where they perform live on TV, and receive
the judges’ opinions. From the semi-final onwards, people over 13 and living in the US, Puerto Rico or the
Virgin Islands can vote for their preferred singers online or through text messaging. The singer with the lowest
number of votes is eliminated. On the final night, the most popular singer becomes the winner of that American
Idol season.
People watch American Idol not only to see the participants sing, but also hear the comments of the judges, who
play an important role in the competition. Their different opinions and interesting arguments make the show
very exciting.

asthma, stroke, issues in the heart are some of the examples. Green living such as making environment-friendly
and sustainable food choices, energy conservation can help reduce pollution to some extent.
Firstly, the consumption of healthier foods can contribute to reducing pollution. People can start by consuming
eco-friendly foods by buying from local farmers, buying organic and seasonal foods, etc. They are made of
fewer pesticides that go into human bodies. Too much exposure to pesticides harms the natural hormones
present in the human body and as a result, people face many health issues like lack of immunity, hormonal
changes and also cancer.
Secondly, through energy conservation, people are saving both natural resources as well as money. The light
bulbs and other electrical appliances that are available in the market produce 2.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide,
which pollutes the air severely. Today there are LED bulbs available in the market that are eco-friendly and also
save energy. Using such energy-efficient appliances reduces up to 30% of the annual electricity bill.
