Big bear
The supplies:
Yarn ICE YARNS “Amigurumi Chenille” (250m/ 50g) – 2 skeins;
Hook Clover 1,75 (choose number of hook for the yarn’s thickness);
Fiberfill (synthetic insulation);
Wooden stick for filling the pieces with fiber (sushi stick);
Glass granulates 3 mm (you can work without it);
Glass eyes 3 or 4 mm;
White cotton thread for the eyes (you can use Iris);
Thread of brown color for the nose;
Sewing thread of the same color as main yarn for ears attaching;
Tapestry needle for contractions;
Strong thread for contractions;
For head fixation: disk 25 mm and disk 30 mm, T-splint 20 mm; for arms attaching:
4 disks 25 mm, 2 T-splints 20 mm; for legs attaching: 4 disks 30 mm, 2 T-splints 20
mm;
Oil pastel and hard brush for the tint;
Notice:
For making this Bear, use yarn which is mentioned above. If you want to use
another yarn, it’s better to use the one, which has the same characteristics as my
yarn (m/ g). The thickness and sort of the chosen yarn must be the same. Otherwise,
the size of a ready toy will differ.
It’s better to use disks made form plastic or fiber. They don’t crack or bind. But if
you don’t have them, use disks from pressboard. Arm and legs disks must easily fit
inside.
If you use the same materials as me, the size of a ready bar will be about 10,63-
11,02 inches.

Take 1 disk of 25 mm and T-splint of 20 mm. Make fixation, i.e. insert T-splint into disk.
Insert this Splint fixation inside the center of the bottom of the head between 20-21 rows
in my case (place disk inside the head and pull T-splint out). Fix the T-splint fastening.

Make the 2nd ear, as the 1st one.

Head decoration
Mark the center of the head with thread of another color. It will help us to place ears and
eyes in symmetry to each other.
Attach eyes between 10-11 rows.
Mark eyes attachments with the pins.
Before eye attaching, make eye contractions first. It helps to make eyes more expressive.
Take a needle and strong thread of the same color as main one. Insert needle in the back of
the bottom of the head (point 1). Pull thread out the place of the 1st eye (point 2). Then
insert needle in next hole of the same row up (point 3) and pull it out the point 1. Leave
tail threads. Repeat the same actions from another side of the head. Point 1 must be the
same for 2 sides.
9
Big bear in a sweater, pattern. Author: Olya Radost
So, ends of contraction threads must be out the same place (point 1). Pull them, but not too
tight and fix them between each other in 2 knots. Hide tail threads.
Mark eye attaching places with pins again. Take eyes on safe fastening, tapestry needle
and some strong thread. Insert needle from the back of the head (point 1). Pull it out the
point of the 1st eye (point 2). Then pull thread through the loop of the eye and insert the
needle in the point 1 thought the point 2. Do nothing with thread ends.
Repeat the same actions with the 2nd eye. But, point 1 must be the only point for both
sides. So, tail threads must be pulled out from the point 1. Tighten them a bit and make 2
strong knots, then hide these tail threads inside the head.

Embroider the white of an eye under the eye with the help of white cotton thread to make
it more expressive (see the photo).
Wet the needle with some
strong glue and slightly touch
with this needle the white of the
eye to fix them.
Embroider the nose with thin needle and thread of brown color. I’ll show you one of the
ways of nose embroidering:

Fix ears to the head with the help of pins. I place each ear in the distance of 8sc from the
center of the head.
Sew ears to the head with sewing thread of the same color as main yarn. Hide tail threads
inside the head with the hook.
13
Big bear in a sweater, pattern. Author: Olya Radost
It’s time to tint the nose. Take dry oil pastel (in my case, they are soft crayons by Faber
Castell) and hard paintbrush. Wet the brush with water a bit. Take necessary color with the
brush and tint the nose accurately.
The arm (2 pieces)
Marker must be placed exactly in the lower side of the arm.

2 row. inc, 3 sc, 3 inc, 3 sc, 2 inc (18)
3-9 rows. 18 sc (7 rows)
If marker is shifted in the process,
make 1 shifting stitch (i.e. don’t
finish the last stitch of a row (or
make one more stitch of the
following row) and place marker
in it then. It’s better to make
shifting stitches in turning rows.

Find the best position for the arm attachment. In my case, attaching points are between
15-16 rows ( the distance between the head and the upper part of arms is about 0,79
inches). Take 2 disks od 25mm and a pliers. Insert the arms into holes in both sides of the
body. Insert splints into disks inside the body and fix them with pliers.

Before attaching the legs, fill the body with fiber a bit to make the process of attaching
easier. Find out the best positions for the legs, if they are symmetrical to each other. You
can check how the bear can sit.
Fix with thread the best attaching points, which are between 44-45 rows in my case.
26

Sweater for the bear
The supplies:
Knit needles #1,8
Yarn Alize Diva Missisipi (350 m/100 g)– 1 skein. Also you can use yarn Drops Nord
(170 m/50 g)– 1 skein;
Abbreviations:
K – knit
V – YO (yarn over), 1 k, YO
The sweater is made from the neck to the bottom, in a circle, with 4 knit needles. The
sweater is without any seam. Using this way, you can easily try the sweater on and make
some changes if it’s necessary.
Cast on stitches according to the size of your bear. The number of stitches can differ in
your case, but they must divide in 4.
The neck girth of my bear is 6,3 inches.
Cast on 56 stitches in 2 needles.
1 row – 56 k, dividing all stitches in 4 needles (14 stitches on each needle).
2-15 row. 56 k (14 rows)
Now it’s time to make a raglan. Due to the fact, we are making a sweater for the toy, but
not for the man, we need to make increases for raglan in another way. Try the neck of the
sweater on the bear and find out required number of stitches. In my case, I need 14 stitches
29
Big bear in a sweater, pattern. Author: Olya Radost
for the back and 14 stitches for the front, 12 stitches are for every sleeve and 4 stitches are
for the raglan lines.
15 row. 7 k, V, 12 k, V, 14 k, V, 12 k, V, 7 k (64)
Remind you, V is 1 YO, 1 k, 1 YO

Try on the sweater. Find out if it’s necessary to make any increases. In my case, I don’t
need to make any increases in the sleeves, but need to make some increases in the front
and the back of the sweater. So, I’ll make yo only in both sides of the front/ back.

Put stitches of the sleeves in the additional needle, and work only the front and the back of
the sweater.
Raglan stitches are worked with the front/ back too.
34 row. 18 k, put 26 stitches in the additional needle, 36 k, put 26 stitches in the

Work the front and the back of the sweater (72k in every row) up to required length of the
sweater. I’ve worked 18 rows.

Bind off stitches. But before it, turn every stitch, not to let it twist in the process.
Before turning (до поворота)
After turning (после поворота)
Cut thread, leaving some short tail thread.
Work the sleeves. Use 3 needles for the sleeves.
34
Big bear in a sweater, pattern. Author: Olya Radost
Attach thread and work in a circle, 26k in every row up to required length. I’ve worked 35
rows. Cut thread, leaving some tail thread.
Decorate the last rows with the help of a hook. Pull tail thread through the 1 st stitch.
Pull thread through the last stitch and pull it out in the wrong side.
Fix and cut thread.
