Goethe- Zertifikat B2 certifies that the candidate’s skills correspond to the fourth
level (B2) of the CEFR. I took this exam in February, 2020 and my score was:
Hören: 93/ 100
Sprechen: 100/ 100
Schreiben: 100/ 100

Lesen: 97/ 100
This score is certainly possible to achieve, but requires some planning and resources.
To be able to give a detailed account, I thought back to my own experience and
preparation and wrote this article in two parts.
Read on for my top tips to score well in the official B2 Goethe exam:
Important books that I used:
1. Mit Erfolg zum Goethe-Zertifikat B2 Testbuch
2. Prüfungstraining Goethe-Zertifikat B2
3. Projekt B2 neu Testbuch by Chr. Karabatos
Use these exam preparation books in that order after standard Aspekte neu B2 Lehr-
and Arbeitsbuch. Apart from these, Mit Erfolg Übungsbuch and So geht's zu B2 are
great for topic-wise vocabulary.
1. Hören/ Listening
Listen to the audio clips from books: first without transcripts and then check with the
transcripts usually given in books.
Use speakers instead of earphones if you can, because this module is conducted via
speakers during exams instead of individual headsets.
Sharpen your listening skill doing daily chores. Toward the last few days to the exam I even
used to play the audio clips during my afternoon nap at a low volume, since our brain
processes auditory input also while sleeping and I am positive that it helps to some
degree!
Listening to German songs isn't going to work at B2 level. Channels like Das Erste, DW
and ZDF would be good for overall listening comprehension. They have news and
documentaries on various topics, which help with general knowledge and standard
German as well as different accents.
Remember in the exam, just listening for keywords in the audio doesn’t help. You have to
pay full attention to everything the speaker says. Do NOT make assumptions based on
your own opinion on the topic.

2. Sprechen/ Speaking

Upgrade your general knowledge. Start thinking of the pros and cons of topics like-
Playing sports, Volunteering, Healthy eating habits, etc. The books have enough number
of topics for you to start.
Practice with a partner from the get-go. As the exam takes place "zu zweit", doing so will
prepare you for the real thing. Give each other honest feedback.
You can prepare in front of a mirror for the first segment (Sprechen Teil 1), which is a
presentation. Sometimes I used to practice with my father who doesn't know German.
Here the focus was to overcome the anxiety related to speaking in front of an audience,
however small.
Write the Redemittel you feel comfortable using on a sheet of paper and paste it on a wall
in your room. Keep reading it now and then.
In the exam room there is no need to panic. Think of it as a friendly (but formal!) meeting
rather than a test. It makes no difference whether you are an external or internal
candidate.
If you make a mistake while speaking in front of the examiners, pause and correct it.
Repeating the sentence correctly once doesn’t go against you. In fact it lets the examiners
know that you are aware of what you are saying, instead of just letting your thoughts out
in a hurry.
In the second segment which is a discussion between two candidates, remember you do
not have to negate every point of your partner to score. Counter two or three arguments if
you need to, and always conclude either by convincing your partner, being convinced or
making a compromise in-between.
In the Question- Answer round of the first segment, do NOT answer in just one word. Say
complete sentences, try to add some weight to your answer. Remember this in the second
segment too, when you wrap up the discussion.
These were some of my observations for Hören and Sprechen modules.
Read the second part for Lesen, Schreiben modules and some extra, important
resources and pointers :)
