INTRODUCTION
The social challenges faced by young mothers in marginalized communities remain a

pressing issue, especially in rural areas like Raw-an Point, Baroy, Lanao del Norte. Early

pregnancy and financial instability are prevalent problems, particularly among out-of-school

young women, who are often forced to drop out due to the demands of motherhood. These young

mothers face a multitude of socioeconomic challenges, including limited access to education and

stable employment, thereby perpetuating the cycle of poverty.

According to the Social Work Students' recent survey, a significant issue identified in

Barangay Raw-an Point is the prevalence of young mothers with no sustainable source of

income. This situation not only impacts the quality of life for these young women but also affects

their families and the broader community. The majority of these young mothers are either

unemployed or engaged in informal, low-paying jobs, relying heavily on the inconsistent income

of their partners or relatives. Consequently, their daily lives are marked by financial insecurity,

which often leads to stress, anxiety, and a sense of helplessness.

The narratives of individuals like Mae Bamuya, Jay-Ann Bamuya, Jasmine Baroy, and

Dianne Guilan highlight the reality of young mothers grappling with financial hardship. Mae, for

instance, is a single mother with no stable source of income, relying on minimal government

assistance to survive. Jay-Ann, although married, faces a similar struggle as her husband's

earnings are insufficient to cover their daily needs. Jasmine, who dropped out of high school due

to early pregnancy, occasionally sells children's clothes online to make ends meet. Meanwhile,

Dianne's husband, a tricycle driver, also earns inconsistently, leaving the family vulnerable to

financial

instability.
These young mothers often lack access to essential resources and opportunities, which

exacerbates their financial difficulties. The absence of a reliable source of income, compounded

by the lack of educational attainment and limited skills, restricts their capacity to improve their

socio-economic status. This situation underscores the need for targeted social support and

interventions that can empower young mothers by providing them with access to education, skills

training, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The socio-economic conditions in Raw-an Point, Baroy, reflect broader systemic issues

that require holistic community-based approaches. Addressing the financial and social challenges

of young mothers is crucial in breaking the cycle of poverty and promoting sustainable

development. Through initiatives aimed at empowering these women, there is potential not only

to uplift their individual lives but also to create a ripple effect that benefits their families and the

community as a whole. The focus of this study is to assess the challenges faced by young

mothers in Raw-an Point and explore strategies to provide them with the support needed to

overcome their socio-economic barriers.

Mae L. Bamuya, also known as “Meme,” is a 23-year-old mother who is doing her best to

support her young family. She was born on June 22, 2001, in Barangay Raw-an Point and now

lives in Purok-3, Raw-an Point, Baroy, Lanao del Norte. Meme has two children: a daughter who

is 5 years old and currently in kindergarten, and a son who is 2 years old. She became a mother

for the first time when she was just 17 years old.

Life has not been easy for Meme and her family. Her husband works as a laborer in her

aunt’s fish pond, earning only 2,100 pesos every 15 days. This income is not enough to cover all
Personal Information
their needs, especially since they are also taking care of her husband’s younger sister. This sister

lives with them and is currently in 4th grade at Raw-an Point Elementary School, which is

located close to their home.

Meme shared that they are facing many financial struggles. She finds it hard to manage

their daily expenses, even though they recently received some financial aid from the Department

of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). This assistance helped them for a short time, but it

was not enough to solve their ongoing financial problems.

To help her husband with their household expenses, Meme takes on small side jobs

whenever she can. She sometimes works for her aunt, who is also her husband’s boss, by

washing dishes during family events like birthdays and harvest celebrations. She also helps with

packing “alamang” (shrimp paste) when there are orders to fill. Although these side jobs do not

pay much, every little bit helps them get by.

In addition to these side jobs, Meme tries to save money by growing some vegetables in a

small garden near their home. She grows what she can, like tomatoes and leafy greens, to use in

their meals. This small garden helps provide some fresh food for her family, reducing the amount

they need to spend on groceries.

Despite all the challenges, Meme is determined to support her family the best she can.

She hopes that one day they will be able to overcome their financial difficulties and provide a

better life for their children. For now, she continues to work hard, taking every opportunity she

can find to earn a little extra money and make ends meet.

INDIVIDUAL FOCUSED ASSESSMENT

Jay-Ann A. Bamuya, fondly known as “Je Ann,” is a young mother who faces daily

struggles to provide for her family. She has a five-year-old son and is doing everything she can to

support him. Her husband works as a laborer, but his income is very low, barely enough to cover

their basic needs. Each day is a challenge for Je Ann as she tries to stretch their limited resources,

constantly worrying about how to make ends meet.

Personal Information
Je Ann shared that she recently received financial assistance from the Department of

Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through the "Tupad" program. She received 2,000

pesos, just like her sister-in-law Meme, who is also facing financial difficulties. This money

helped them

temporarily, but it was only enough to get by for a short while.

To add to their income, Je Ann takes on side jobs whenever possible. She works for her

aunt, doing various tasks like washing dishes, cooking, and packing “alamang” (shrimp paste)

whenever there are orders. These small jobs bring in a little extra money, but it is still not enough

to fully support their daily needs. The money she earns from these sidelines helps them survive

from day to day, but it doesn’t provide long-term security.

Je Ann admits that being a young mother is incredibly tough. She faces many challenges, and

sometimes it feels overwhelming. However, despite the hardships, she remains determined to

stay strong for her family. She knows she needs to be resilient for the sake of her son and her

husband. Je Ann continues to work hard and push through the struggles, hoping that one day they

will have a more stable and comfortable life.

Jaspher Baroy, better known as "Jasmine" by her neighbors, prefers to go by this name

because she feels more comfortable with it, as her real name sounds masculine. Many of her

neighbors were surprised to learn her real name during a recent interview. Jasmine is a devoted

mother to a four-year-old daughter. She became pregnant at the age of 19 while she was still in

high school, which led her to drop out and focus on raising her child. She now lives in Purok-3,

Raw-an Point, Baroy, Lanao del Norte, with her small family, which includes her husband and

their daughter.
Personal Information
Jasmine’s husband works as a gas station attendant in Baroy, but his salary is often just

enough to cover their bills, leaving little for other necessities. As the sole breadwinner, he

sometimes takes on extra work, hauling feed for "bangus" (milkfish) at a nearby feed dealer. This

is a common way for people in their community to earn additional income.

To help make ends meet, Jasmine occasionally sells children’s clothes online. However,

she can only do this once in a while, especially when they are low on funds. The money she earns

from these sales is usually invested in meeting her daughter's needs. Jasmine expressed that their

financial situation is often tight, but she is determined to do what she can to support her family.

Despite the challenges, Jasmine is a loving and hardworking mother. She and her husband

have managed to build a small house next to his parents' home, where they are trying to create a

stable life for their daughter. Jasmine’s dedication to her family shows through her efforts to

provide for them, even if it means taking on side jobs or making sacrifices.

Life has not been easy for Jasmine, but she remains hopeful and resilient. She believes

that with the support of family and friends, they can get through any difficulty. For Jasmine,

being a mother means doing everything she can to give her daughter a good life, even when times

are tough.

Dianne is a young mother of two who faced significant challenges early in life. She

became pregnant with her first child at the age of 17, which forced her to leave her studies. The

burden of becoming a mother at such a young age was heavy, but she tried her best to embrace

her new role. Tragically, her first baby passed away at just seven months old. The pain of losing

her child was indescribable, and the cause of death remains unknown, leaving her with

unanswered questions

and lingering grief.

A year after this heartbreaking loss, Dianne and her husband, Ryn Pilar, were blessed with

another child—a daughter who is now three years old. Despite their joy in welcoming their little

girl, the family's financial struggles have been a constant challenge. Ryn, who is 38 years old,

works inconsistently as a tricycle driver. His earnings are irregular and often not enough to meet

their daily needs, making it difficult for them to have a stable income.

Dianne shared that the weight of their financial difficulties sometimes overwhelms her,

causing her a lot of stress. The uncertainty of her husband's income adds to their struggles, as

there are days when he can’t find passengers and earn enough money. Dianne feels the pressure

of trying to provide for her family, especially with no stable job or regular source of income to

rely on.

Despite the hardships, Dianne remains determined. She knows that she must stay strong for

her family, even when times are tough. She is willing to work hard to help support her husband

and provide a better future for their daughter. Dianne’s resilience and love for her family push her

INDIVIDUAL FOCUSED ASSESSMENT

Rachell Ann P. Bantul, who is known to everyone as “Lalang,” is a 20-year-old mother of

two sons. She had to stop her studies when she became pregnant at the young age of 16. Last

year, on November 29, 2023, she and her husband were able to get married in a town-sponsored

wedding, which was free for all couples who wanted to tie the knot. Her husband works as a

laborer in their uncle’s fishery, but his income is unstable, which often causes financial strain on

their family.

Lalang shared that after giving birth to their second child, she fell ill three months later.
Personal Information
She believes that the stress from frequent arguments over money contributed to her health issues.

The couple often fights about finances because her husband’s salary is not enough to cover their

basic needs. The irregular income makes it hard for them to manage their expenses, leaving them

in a constant state of financial difficulty.

To help ease their financial burdens, Lalang’s husband received some financial assistance

from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). While this aid was helpful, it

only provided temporary relief. To further support her family, Lalang sometimes assists her aunt

in selling food. She earns a small commission from these side jobs, which helps add to their

household income, even if just a little.

Despite their hardships, Lalang is determined to do what she can to support her family.

She continues to look for ways to earn extra income, hoping to improve their situation. For now,

they are managing as best as they can, relying on each other’s support and occasional assistance

from relatives and the community.

GROUP-FOCUSED ASSESSMENT

The group of mothers in Raw-an Point, Baroy, Lanao del Norte, who experienced early

motherhood, demonstrates remarkable resilience in the face of significant challenges, including

financial instability, emotional stress, and disrupted educational paths. According to Social

Cognitive Appraisal Theory, these mothers' responses to their challenging circumstances are

shaped by how they cognitively assess their financial and emotional difficulties. This appraisal

process influences their coping mechanisms. For example, while many experience stress and

anxiety due to their low-income status, they demonstrate strong coping skills through taking on

side jobs and relying on mutual support within their community.

The Developmental Approach provides a valuable framework for understanding these

mothers' experiences, highlighting their critical growth stages as mothers, partners, and

individuals facing adversity. This approach emphasizes the importance of developmental tasks

and challenges, which are often influenced by social and economic factors. For example, their

determination to provide for their families aligns with the developmental task of establishing a

sense of competence and responsibility, while their love for their children underscores the

importance of nurturing and caring relationships. Their willingness to attend support sessions and

actively seek solutions to their struggles reflects their desire for growth and well-being,

Despite the obstacles, these mothers show impressive strength, motivated by their

commitment to give their children a better life and break the cycle of poverty. Their deep sense of

family responsibility propels them to persevere, even amid limited resources. The emotional

support they find within the group further reinforces their determination, knowing they are not
alone in their struggles. Their shared experiences of early motherhood and financial instability

can be reframed as a source of empowerment, creating a network of solidarity that helps them

navigate these difficult times.
