Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best
answer to each of the following questions from 23 to 30.
As more people migrate to cities in search of better incomes and other opportunities, they have
created a phenomenon called urbanisation. It results in serious problems that affect different social
aspects. Therefore, it is vital to mitigate the negative effects of urbanisation to promote balanced and
sustainable urban planning.
One fundamental aspect of managing urbanisation is effective urban planning and infrastructure
development. Well-designed cities with efficient public transportation, and public spaces can enable
populations to grow without seriously affecting the quality of life. For example, if there are sufficient
green spaces, inhabitants will find it easier to exercise and contribute to a healthier and more livable
urban environment.
Furthermore, sustainable architecture and construction practices play a crucial role in reducing the
environmental impact of urbanisation. Constructing energy-efficient buildings with renewable materials
can contribute to reducing the ecological footprint of urban areas. Additionally, promoting mixed-use
areas that integrate residential and commercial areas with recreational spaces helps create a more
sustainable urban landscape.
To deal with the negative effects of urbanisation, it also requires policies related to social and
economic aspects. Equal access to education and healthcare is vital to make sure that everyone can
receive the benefits. Housing initiatives along with economic policies that generate employment
opportunities can help cope with the issues related to unaffordable housing and poverty in urban areas.
In conclusion, the solutions to urbanisation challenges should be eco-friendly and sustainable, which
is beneficial to all the city inhabitants. With effective approaches and policies, cities can transform the
challenges of urbanisation into opportunities for creating a higher quality of life and environmentally
conscious urban spaces.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best
answer to each of the following questions from 31 to 40.
On Sunday afternoon, food delivery rider Jim Adams, 18, was rushed to hospital with a suspected
broken leg. He’d been struck by a car while riding his bike. Despite his injury, Jim was most
concerned about how he would support himself while unable to work. Jim, like many young adults, is
a gig worker and was delivering an order when the accident happened.
A ‘gig’ is a paid piece of work that people do, especially if they are self-employed. Unlike regular
employees, gig workers do not have benefits such as paid sick leave and a minimum wage. They have no
job security as well as a fixed workload, and, therefore, their pay is unpredictable. This makes budgeting
impossible and means that gig workers can be exploited – when there are bills to pay, any job for any fee
will do.
[I] You might think such work conditions would put people off, but it’s estimated that almost 25 per
cent of American workers are now employed in the gig economy and this is expected to rise. [II] It's
difficult to wrap your head around such a statistic. So what's the attraction? Well, there are plenty of
people like Jim - a university student - whose circumstances don't allow them to work normal hours. [III]
Equally, some students choose gig work because of the freedom it gives them to make their own
decisions about when to wake up, when to work and flow much work to take on. [IV]
Gig work is convenient for students trying to balance work and study. It also helps to develop self-
discipline and a work ethic which will stand them in good stead later in life. But there’s a danger that,
over time, the gig economy will normalise casual work and employment benefits will then become a
thing of the past.
