To Whom it May Concern:
A Love for Life is a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness and funds for
pancreatic cancer research. The average survival rate for stage IV pancreatic
cancer is a little more than 180 days. The 5 year survival rate has remained
somewhat stagnant for the last 50 years- it has 2inally inched up to 13% (it was
just under 5% when we were founded in 2012). With your help, we want to help
improve these numbers in an even more signi2icant way.
The Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania is at the forefront
of pancreatic cancer research. 100% of the money we raise goes to a dedicated
research team there.. Through a combination of our 5Ks and marathons, tennis
benefits, shopping events, private and corporate donations and thousands of
volunteer hours, we raised over $100,000 last year, which we presented to the
ACC in November. We are the largest single donor for this cause.
Catherine Gumbs was one of our youngest and earliest volunteers; she and her
sister coordinated a lemonade stand effort in the summers on the beach in
Avalon. They were armed with business cards that described our cause and
wristbands with our website and organization information.
For several years, she involved her family in hosting garage sales which also
benefitted our non-profit. She launched a “Comics for Cancer” effort, by drawing
comic strips and selling them for one or two dollars- again, always donating to
our cause. It has been so sweet, over these past many years, to see her grow
into a young, confident young woman. We do not live very close together, so we
do not meet up often, but every few months, another donation appears on our
Penn Giving Page. She also managed (with her Mother’s help) to get some press
from a local TV host in New Jersey who ran a story that featured her lemonade
stand. I’ve attached a photo from that day back in 2018.
Catherine’s generosity of spirit and ability to interact so well with the adult world
will serve her well in her coming college years. The world would be a better place
if everyone was as other-focused and kind as she is.
I am happy to answer any questions you might have about our non-profit, or our
interactions with Ms. Gumbs. Just send an email to [email protected] or

Thank you!
