understand Automotive Servicing.

The module 1 - CHECK DISTRIBUTOR ASSEMBLY (TLE_IAAS9IS-IIIa-d-1.1)

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

1. Check distributor assembly.
2. Explain about the function of distributor.

What I Know

Read and identify the statements below. Write your answers on your
activity notebook.

1
What’s In

What is distributor assembly?

A distributor is an enclosed rotating shaft used in spark-ignition internal

combustion engines that have mechanically timed ignition.
The distributor's main function is to route secondary, or high voltage, current
from the ignition coil to the spark plugs in the correct firing order, and for the
correct amount of time. The distributor is the heart of the ignition system. Its
three basic functions are to trigger the firing of the ignition coil, to control
timing advance, and to route or distribute the coil's high voltage output to the
individual spark plugs. On older applications with breaker point ignition
systems, the contact points switch the ignition coil's primary voltage on and
off. The points are mounted on a movable plate in the distributor housing.
Cam lobes on the distributor shaft rotate against a plastic block on the points
to open and close the points. On newer applications with electronic ignition
systems, the distributor contains a magnetic pickup or Hall effect switch
instead of points to generate a signal for the ignition module (which switches
the coil on and off). On many applications, the ignition module itself is also
located inside the distributor (GM HEI) or mounted on the distributor housing
(Ford TFI).

What’s New

used with basic TCI-h ignition
system. Distributor used for
TCI-h with knock control is
similar, but distributor
housing has no vacuum
diaphragm.

2
What is It

Components of a Distributor

• a rotor
Rotors are the moving part in an Alternator that have permanent magnets that
move around the Stator's iron plates to generate an Alternating Current (AC).
Rotors require existing motion to function, so only once the engine or turbine
is already running will a Rotor work with a Stator to provide a charge.

• a distributor cap
Distributor caps and rotors are responsible for passing the voltage from the
ignition coils to the engine's cylinders in order to ignite the fuel-air mixture
inside and power the engine. The coil connects directly to the rotor, and the
rotor spins inside the distributor cap.

• points
The distributor shaft has a cam that operates the contact breaker (also called
points). Opening the points causes a high induction voltage in the
system's ignition coil.

• a hall effect sensor (or an optical sensor)

An optical sensor converts light rays into electronic signals. It measures the
physical quantity of light and then translates it into a form that is readable by
an instrument. An optical sensor is generally part of a larger system that
integrates a source of light, a measuring device and the optical sensor.

• a condenser
The purpose of the condenser is to receive the high-pressure gas from the
compressor and convert this gas to a liquid. It does it by heat transfer, or the
principle that heat will always move from a warmer to a cooler substance.

• a vacuum advance (or a mechanical advance)

Under a light load and part throttle conditions, timing can be advanced. This
improves throttle response and makes the engine more efficient. It also helps
the engine run cooler. The vacuum advance provides this benefit BEFORE the
Mechanical Advance provides Total Timing.

• an ignition coil (sometimes located inside the distributor)

An ignition coil (also called a spark coil) is an induction coil in an
automobile's ignition system that transforms the battery's voltage to the
thousands of volts needed to create an electric spark in the spark plugs to
ignite the fuel.

• an ignition module (sometimes located inside or on the distributor)

The ignition module works together with the computer to time the
engine's ignition system for the best performance and efficiency. One of the
specific functions of the ESC module is to advance or retard the timing of
the ignition system, depending on the operation conditions.

What’s More

Disassembling and Assembling Distributor

Fig. 5.1 Distributor assembly used with basic TCI-h ignition system.
Distributor used for TCI-h with knock control is similar, but distributor
housing has no vacuum diaphragm.

4
Fig. 5.2 Some disassembly of the distributor is required to replace the Hall
sender. It will require a snap-ring plier and, for 16-valve engines, a thin drift
or punch. It is possible to disassemble the base plate, the distributor shaft,
and the centrifugal advance mechanism on GX and MZ engines for cleaning
and inspection, but these are not available as individual replacement parts.

What I Have Learned

Draw Fig. 5.2 disassembling and assembling distributor in a bond paper then label
the parts.
