Who is a Chemical
Engineer?
A chemical engineer in chemistry is someone who uses the
principles of math, physics, and chemistry to design and
optimize chemical processes. They work on inventing,
optimizing and economizing new technologies and products
in fields such as chemical manufacturing, foods, fuels etc.
Educational Requirements of
a Chemical Engineer

To become a chemical engineer, you will need to gear up in

high school by taking courses in science and math,
particularly calculus. From there, you will need a bachelor’s
degree in chemical engineering, preferably from a college
that offers concentration in your field of interest. Programs
for chemical engineering usually take four (4) years to
complete and include classroom, laboratory and field
studies.
Places Where Chemical
Engineers Can be Used

Factory
Chemical engineers work in a
variety of fields, including
manufacturing, food
processing etc. They also
contribute to the technical
products and military
industries. In addition to traditional careers, chemical
engineers find opportunities in biotechnology, electronic
device fabrication, and environmental engineering. They
work around large-scale production equipment that is
housed both indoors and outdoors. Accordingly, they are
often required to wear personal protective equipment (e.g.
hard hats, goggles, and steel-toe shoes).

Healthcare
Chemical engineers play a
key role in advancing
biomedicine by designing
complex devices to enhance the treatment and management
of disease. They also engineer medical systems that function
as artificial organs and that can accurately deliver drugs in
the right quantity to the right location.

Chemical engineers also

work in research
laboratories. Their role in a
research laboratory
includes assisting with the
development and
optimization of chemical
processes, conducting
experiments, collecting data, performing calculations and
simulations, and helping to design and test process
equipment and instrumentation.
Impact of Chemical Engineers
on Society

Over the past century, the work of chemical engineers has

helped transform societies and the lives of individuals, from
the synthetic fertilizers that helped feed the world to the
development of materials used in fuels, electronics, medical
devices, and other products.
They have made a significant impact on society through
their work in safer batteries for electric cars, pipelines for
chemical transportation, and technologies to convert carbon
dioxide into useful chemicals.
I think that it is safe to say that without Chemical Engineers
we wouldn’t be were we are today as a society.
