Exploring the Influence of Davao del Norte Regional Sports Academy School Facilities
on the Academic Performance of the Student-Athletes

1.0 Rationale

The facilities offered by a school determine the students' health, behavior,

participation, learning, and development. The physical and mental well-being of the students
and teachers also depend on the facilities they are acquiring at school. Hence, a school must
have the facilities required by the teachers and students so that a learning-conducive
environment is created (Vishwashanti Gurukul World School, 2022).

In the Philippines, approximately 90 percent of the Filipinos value education to

acquire stability and better career prospects than merely being outstanding in extra-curricular
activities (Lucas, 2013). It is a common belief that a well-defined future depends on the
academic achievements of an individual particularly in a career or path that he/she may
undergo in the future.

Sports training academies select individuals that passes strict screening procedure to
validate academic and school performance with innate talents to develop and maximize their
skills so they may become an excellent athlete in the future. According to the National
Academy of Sports (2023), some of the eligibilities for the applicants of the academy should
show potential in their particular sport, and to show proof of being in good health and
physical fitness to undergo a rigorous athletic program.

The Davao del Norte regional Sports Academy (DNRSA) adopt this idea in which
they created a school inside a training facility area with complete training facilities and
infrastructures for school and sports in one venue. Their curriculum offers a unique style in
which it is designed that a student will also become an athlete at the same time. Thus, all the
students in DNRSA are student-athletes.

However, being a student-athlete carries a huge responsibility. A student-

athlete has to juggle both academics and sports. As a student-athlete, you will most likely
have all kinds of obligations, such as classes, workouts, practices, games, and many other

social and community events (Patterson, 2024). For them, it is a big challenge to develop
athletic skills and enhance academic achievements at the same time. Nevertheless, it also
opens doors such as living a healthy life, or it may assist them in getting employed referrals
due to the skills gained as a student-athlete.

Majority of schools in Davao del Norte has a small area to contain the sports that they
offer within their campus, which hinder the accessibility and availability of a training area for
the development of their performances. In Tagum City Division, Department of education,
Davao del Norte, Philippines, it has been noted some of their school educational leaders do
not adequately help some athletes with regard to athletic gear to student-athlete equipment,
and necessities as increasingly more student-athletes in public schools depend on their
coaches (Boquel & Junsay, 2023).

It is in this concept that Davao del Norte Regional Sports Academy is unique since it
meets all the architectural requirements conducive for both learning and training. It provides
specialized grounds for training through academy where youths of all ages the athletic skills
with important life experiences without neglecting the academic scholastic activities (Sports
Madness, 2025).

The Davao del Norte Regional Sports Academy has unique curriculum than the
regular high schools since aside from their regular subjects, students are also given time for
their training. With efficient facilities, it is seemingly obvious that the students will improve
on their sports performance. It is in this reason that their time schedule for academics is being
modified since their performance in training will form part of their academic performance.

Others can easily notice the difference with the students who are engaging in the sport
while studying in school. Many benefits and opportunities can be obtained if an individual is
involved in sports. Sports is thought to have a huge role in the growth of self-esteem, through
augmenting in their individual’s belief in their ability to attain goals and rewards for their
work through tangible accomplishments (Yilmaz, 2023). It is in this idea that this study is
being conducted to analyze the influence of Davao del Norte Regional Sports Academy
sports facilities on the academic performance of the student-athletes.

1.1 Problem Statement

A Sports Academy has a different time schedule than other usual time schedules for
other secondary schools since students are provided with sufficient time for training (Indresh,
2023). With their training facilities, it is apparently clear that the students will enhance their
sports performance. Student athletes require effective facilities to develop their skills. The
pride created by an athletic facility can have a positive impact on the attitude and the
overall performance of the athletes (Klaus, 2020).

In a regular school, sports classes are hardly scheduled for twice or thrice a week
and also the sports infrastructure and facilities are not that advanced. But in a sports
academy, the authorities focus more on the sports infrastructure and emphasize active
sports, with flexible modified academic hours (Aditya School of Sports, 2024). With these
being said, it is seemingly obvious that sports academy gives favor in sports in terms of
time schedules as well as the facilities, therefore the researcher will conduct this study to
examine the influence of the school facilities in a sports academy on the student-athletes’
academic performance.

1.5 Theoretical Framework

1.5.1. Environmental Learning Theory

Figure 2. Environmental Learning Theory (Bandura, 2000)

Environmental learning Theory suggests that we learn social behavior by observing

and imitating the behavior of others. Learning is everything about interacting with the
environment and creating a sustained change in behavior or knowledge that improves human
performance (Bandura, 2000). Julian (2003) also states that environment is a significant
component in learning and development of humans. It was based on the premise that
personality is a transaction between the person and his or her environment. Aside from the
person's reaction to the environment, the person's experience is also involved. The
transaction of the environment, the person, and her reaction to it generates behavior and the
learning.

1.5.2. Links between Environment & Educational Outcomes Theory

Figure 3. Links Between Environment & Educational Outcomes (Lackney, 1999)

The classroom is a critical setting that must be a good physical and social setting.
Facilitative physical and social settings can affect students' attainment in schooling. Physical
setting is composed of numerous interacting variables such as class size, spatial density,
location, acoustics and noise, isolated study space, ambient temperatures and air (Lackney,
1999). Yusoff (2014) also stated that social setting is another complex set of variables such as
social policies, instructional strategies, peer tutoring and aspects of the school climate.

1.6 Conceptual Framework

Figure 4. Conceptual Framework

This study mainly focuses on the influence of Davao del Norte Regional Sports
Academy on the academic performance of the secondary student-athletes. The school’s
infrastructural facilities will be measured in terms of its acoustic and noise, size, furniture,
and lighting. These indicators are the key factors that influence the student-athletes’ academic
performance (Olugbenga, 2019). Moreover, with regards to the infrastrucutral facilities, the
academic performance containing the attendance rates, student learning progress, and the
social development will be measured as these are the indicatoras that is being influenced by
the school’s infrastructural facilities.

1.7 Methodology

1.7.1. RESEARCH DESIGN

Mixed Method Correlational Non-Experimental research design will be used in the

study to assess the relationship between the variables. Mixed method is a popular approach
that seeks to overcome the limitations of qualitive and quantitative research paradigms
(Saraswati et al., 2023). In addition to that, Correlational research is a form of non-
experimental research of two or more variables that are measured. It also determines the
relationship or correlation between the variables without manipulation (Sreekumar, 2024).

The researcher will be disseminating survey questionnaires on the student-athletes of

DNRSA to collect primary data with regards to their academic performance and school
facilities. Moreover, the researcher will then conduct and in-depth interview on the
authorities of DNRSA that will serve as a supporting data for the data gathered from survey
questionnaires to be more stringent.

1.7.2. RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

1.7.2.1. Ocular Inspection

The proponent will be conducting an ocular inspection at Davao del Norte

Regional Sports Academy. The proponent then takes pictures of the sports and school
facilities to verify the current status of the school’s facilities. This practical approach
will also enable a more thorough assessment of any possible problems or areas that
require improvement. Future conservation efforts will greatly benefit from the data
gathered from the ocular inspection.

1.7.2.2. Survey Questionnaire

Survey questionnaire is a particular tool utilized within a survey to collect

information (Bhandari, 2021). The student-athletes of DNRSA will be answering
survey questionnaires that the proponent will be preparing for the primary data
collection.

1.7.2.3. In-Depth Interview

An in-depth interview will be conducted to allow the researcher to explore

complex topics and understand participants’ perspective in detail (Oberoi, 2024).
Moreover, this interview will assist the researcher to gain data from the school
authorities that will serve as a supporting data for the data gathered using the survey
questionnaires.

1.7.2.4. Secondary Data

This data constitutes school performances and school records of the student-
athletes. Viewing of school records such as grades is confidential, therefore it may be
prohibited as per school premises. However, the researcher will still compose a letter
and wait for approval of the school authorities for viewing the student-athlete’s school
records. But if it would not be approved, records from their exam scores coming from
them will serve as the secondary data.

1.7.3. SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The primary research subjects for the study are the junior and senior high school
student-athletes of Davao del Norte Regional Sports Academy enrolled on post-pandemic
school years namely S.Y. 22-23, S.Y. 23-24, S.Y. 24-25. Data will be gathered from the
student-athletes. To attain the highest possible accuracy of this study, a purposive sampling
will be integrated. This sampling technique allows the researcher to select group of
individuals with the acquired criteria for the analysis (Dovetail, 2023).
College of Architecture and Fine Arts Education
4th Floor, DPT Building
Matina Campus, Davao City
Phone No/Telefax: (082) 244-3400 to 244-3470 local109

In addition to that, the proponent will be using a full population sample of the
respondents of DNRSA since after thorough consideration, the whole population that
qualifies the criteria is 50 or less (Stratton, 2023). According to Shantikumar (2018), for
populations of less than 50, it is usually best to survey a population in its entirety.

1.7.4. RESEARCH PROCEDURE

The researcher will use survey questionnaires to elicit information from all the
respondents selected. This is because the instrument can be used for a large population
simultaneously and can also provide the researcher with an easy accumulation of data. The
questionnaire for the students will be having two parts. Part one will be questions that
provided demographic data on age, sex, and class. In addition, part two will be used in
gathering information to determine the extent of influence from Davao del Norte Regional
Sports Academy school facilities on the academic performance of the student-athletes.

Descriptive analysis will then be used to analyze the response of the student-athletes.
Descriptive analysis is a brief informative coefficient giving an account of a particular data
set, either a sample of a population or a representation of a total population (Hayes, 2024).

The researcher will then conduct an in-depth interview on the school authorities. The
data gathered from the interview will serve as a supporting data on the data coming from the
survey questionnaires. Thematic analysis will be used in this data gathering.

1.8 Ethical Considerations

Ethical principles are necessary to guard the rights and dignity of the research
participants/respondents. Authenticity and benevolence are two dimensions of truthfulness
that are directly associated to ethics. In simpler words: “A trustworthy party will not
disproportionately exploit weaknesses.” (Hasan et al., 2021).
College of Architecture and Fine Arts Education
4th Floor, DPT Building
Matina Campus, Davao City
Phone No/Telefax: (082) 244-3400 to 244-3470 local109

In forthcoming research endeavors concerning delicate variables such as a student-

athletes’ academic and sports achievements, ethical considerations will remain of utmost
importance. The researcher will need to address multiple ethical aspects to ensure the dignity,
rights, and well-being of participants throughout the study. Initially, the researcher will need
to secure informed consent from all individuals involved in the in-depth interviews.
Participants should receive comprehensive information regarding the study's objectives,
potential risks and benefits, their right to withdraw at any point, and the handling of their
data.

To achieve this, personal identifiers must be eliminated from interview transcripts and
other research materials to prevent potential harm or breaches of confidentiality. Setting up a
non-judgemental and supportive interview environment allowing participants and
respondents the liberty of expressing themselves constraint and discomfort.
