Abstract: What does the age of participation look like from the perspective of a
museum visitor? Arguably, the concept of participative experiences is already so
deeply ingrained in our culture that we may not even think about it as participation.
Museum visitors engage in a number of activities, of which observing the exhibits is
only one part. Since most visitors come to the museum together with someone else,
they spend time and attention on the people they came with, and often the needs of
the group are given priority over individual preferences. How can museums tap into
these activities - and make themselves relevant to visitors? In this chapter we will
try to approach this constructively, as a design opportunity. Could it be productive
for the museum to consider itself not only as a disseminator of knowledge, but
also as the facilitator of participative activities between visitors? In what follows,
we will outline a range of practical design projects that serve as examples of this
approach. These projects were part of the European Union funded Horizon2020
project GIFT, a cross-disciplinary collaboration between researchers, artists,
designers and many international museums and heritage organisations, exploring
the concept of interpersonal museum experiences (see https://gifting.digital/).
What the projects have in common is that they build on visitors co-creating and
sharing their own narratives in the museum context. We suggest that these projects
demonstrate a spectrum of possibilities: From experiences that take place almost
without any museum involvement, to those that give museums a role in curating

Abstract: The article discusses developments in museum curating brought about by
digital technology. It notes that museums may use digital technology to open their
collections and their missions to the world and to democratize their development.
Thus some museums use crowdsourcing, or the use of many points of view from
the general public to determine the result of a project. It notes further that some
museums put their entire collection online, allowing people to see them who would
otherwise be unable to do so. This has resulted in some cases of viewers providing
information about a piece on exhibit that the staff was unaware of, thus increasing
the general public's knowledge. It points out that the use of social web sites circulates
information about the museum that it does not control.

Abstract: Museum crowdsourcing projects have drastically changed the ways in
which individuals engage with cultural objects. In particular, individuals' participation
in representation of cultural objects through creating, sharing, and curating museum
cultural objects contributes to the creation of multifaceted and rich representation
of cultural objects as well as transgression of institutional boundaries between
cultural heritage institutions. Applying Bourdieu's (2010) conceptualization of cultural
capital to museum crowdsourcing initiatives, this study suggests that cultural objects
should be considered not only in relation to other objects, but also in relation to the
social structure of the world and suggests that successful engagement with the
crowd is grounded on an understanding of engaged individuals' cultural capital and
habitus. This approach will facilitate creation of not only multifaceted and multivalent
representation of cultural objects but also ensure sustainable and meaningful

Abstract: RESUMO O presente artigo identifica e descreve dados relativos à
dinâmica de participação coletiva e colaborativa na produção de informações
sobre os museus brasileiros na Wikipédia. Utilizando como amostra os museus
administrados diretamente pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Museus (Ibram), foi realizada
a coleta de dados da Wikipédia utilizando o software XTools. Dessa forma o
presente artigo busca demonstrar o potencial da Wikipédia como fonte de pesquisa,
principalmente no que tange à produção de informações sobre os museus brasileiros
na internet. Os resultados identificam que 20 museus possuem página na Wikipédia,
tendo sido editadas por um total de 555 usuários que realizaram um total de 1.108
edições nas páginas. Identifica-se grande desigualdade na dinâmica de produção
de informação nas páginas e uma expressiva rede de editores realizando ações de

Abstract: O artigo baseia-se em pesquisa que busca verificar o papel do Design da
Informação na Curadoria Digital do Museu da Pessoa na Web 2.0 e o seu objetivo é
refletir sobre o seu fato museal, histórias de vida. Em tempos de custódia ampliada,
o Museu da Pessoa destaca-se como sistema memorial dinâmico, interativo e
colaborativo. Previsto em e para Curadoria Digital, o Design da Informação é meio
facilitador de indexações de conteúdo informacional bem como da organização
gráfica desses conteúdos, tanto top-down quanto bottom-up, a fim de que sujeitos
não apenas reconheçam histórias de vida como um objeto cultural tangível, um fato
museal, mas também para que se reconheçam enquanto seres humanos atuantes
no processo informacional, reforçando vínculos identitários por meio de Tecnologias
de Informação e Comunicação (TIC). A necessidade de se conhecer novos meios
e estratégias para a Curadoria Digital em instituições museológicas no âmbito
da Ciência da Informação justifica esse artigo com o qual espera-se favorecer a
compreensão do Museu como um modelo para a preservação e interação com
histórias de vida, narrativas autobiográficas, entendidas, neste contexto, como bens
culturais e patrimônio memorial. Como resultado do estudo, verifica-se que, por meio
de suas metodologias, e em convergência com a Ciência da Informação, o Design
da Informação cria um simulacro de museu online, em fluxo e ubíquo, bem como
condições para uma Curadoria Digital (top-down), tendo em vista a representação
e a preservação de objetos culturais digitais, assim como seu acesso, aos agentes
informacionais da instituição e aos internautas (bottom-up), interativamente, na Web
2.0.

Abstract: There has been—and continues to be—tension between Native peoples
and museums in the United States due to past collecting practices and exhibitions
that strive to interpret their culture and history without their involvement. Previously,
many of these exhibitions stereotyped and lumped Native peoples together, depicting
their cultures as static and interpreting them and their material culture from a
Western scientific perspective. Changes are being made. Collaboration between
Native peoples and museums in all areas of museum work, including exhibitions,
is beginning to be considered by many as a best practice. Exhibitions developed in
collaboration with Native peoples, with shared curatorial authority, decidedly help
ease the historic tension between the two, and they are much more vibrant and
accurate than when collaboration is lacking. This article will provide three examples
of collaboration, defined with our tribal partners, to develop exhibitions at History
Colorado, the state history museum, concluding with lessons learned. [ABSTRACT

Abstract: Existen ciertas tensiones, actualmente como también han existido en
el pasado, entre poblaciones indígenas por un lado y museos en los Estados
Unidos por el otro lado, acerca de las prácticas de adquirir ejemplares de
culturas indígenas y de preparer exhibiciones de los mismos, sin involucrar
a gente indígena. Las exhibiciones de este tipo en el pasado a menudo eran
caracterizadas por observaciones estereotipadas que muchas veces agruparon
distintas poblaciones indígenas como que fueron una sola. Además, el material
cultural de las exhibiciones era presentado como estático y la interpretación del
mismo era exclusivamente de la perspectiva científica occidental. Sin embargo,
se ven cambios en la actualidad. Ahora muchos consideran que la colaboración

entre comunidades indígenas y museos en todos los ámbitos de trabajo en los
museos, incluso el de las exhibiciones, es la práctica o método más recommendable.
Las exhibiciones preparadas con comunidades indígenas, en la que se comparte
la responsabilidad, ayuda mucho en disminuir la falta de confianza entre los
indígenas y las profesionales de los museos. Las exhibiciones colaborativas son más
llamativas y correctas que las exhibiciones que carecen de esta colaboración. La
ponencia actual proporciona tres ejemplos de colaboración, realizados con nuestros
socios indígenas, en exhibiciones en History Colorado, el museo estatal de historia,

Abstract: Le istituzioni museali rappresentano un prezioso strumento di inclusione
culturale/sociale ai fini dell’educazione al patrimonio, della promozione della sua
conoscenza e della creazione di una nuova e consapevole relazione partecipata
fra comunità civile e patrimonio; si tratta di benefici e valori oggi sottostimati e
comunque spesso mal interpretati nell’attuale clima politico. Il contributo delinea i
vantaggi dell’inclusione culturale, il ruolo assunto in questo settore dalle istituzioni
in ambito internazionale e nazionale (dall’UNESCO al MIBAC) e illustra numerosi
e significativi provvedimenti nazionali ed europei concernenti l’inclusione culturale.
Si analizzano inoltre gli esempi di musei italiani e stranieri che hanno curato il
processo verso l’inclusione entro un ampio quadro, relativo alla presenza anche di
altri organismi culturali (come biblioteche e teatri) con i quali le istituzioni museali
hanno costituito un sistema integrato di offerta culturale. Grazie all’osservazione di
ciò che avviene in altre realtà europee e in alcuni comuni italiani, si suggerisce una

«comunità di eredità». Museums as institutions represent an important instrument
for cultural/social inclusion with the purpose of educating people about cultural
heritage, promoting knowledge of it and the creation of a new and aware participative
relationship between the civil community and the cultural heritage itself. These today
are benefits and values that are often underestimated and are not well understood
in the current political climate. This contribution describes the advantages of cultural
inclusion, the role taken on in this sector by institutions in the international and
national context (from UNESCO to MIBAC) and illustrates many and significant

national and European provisions regarding cultural inclusion. Examples from Italian
and foreign museums are also analysed, museums that have followed the process
towards inclusion in a wide framework, including also other cultural organisms
(such as libraries and theatres) with which the museum institutions have created an
integrated system of cultural provision. Thanks to observation of what takes place
in other European situations and in some Italian cities, a solution is put forward that
would allow Italian museums, in collaboration with other institutions, to proceed
towards a necessary and desirable cultural inclusion, through the territorial networks
(of museums and other cultural institutions) and the involvement of the «heritage
communities».

Abstract: This paper describes and expands on the discussions held at a
symposium at the Research Center for Material Culture in the Netherlands in
February 2020, which was held as part of the planning of an upcoming "Amazonia"
exhibition to be curated at that institution by some of the authors. The symposium
invited curators and museum directors who had recently carried out projects with
Amazonian communities to share their experiences with co‐production and co‐
curation. The discussion and this paper aim to be a reflexive critical first step
before reaching out to potential partners in South America. This paper supplements
discussions on participative museology by examining the underlying frameworks
of an exhibition project at its outset, in addition to contributing, as happens more
commonly, post‐rationalizations in a final written evaluation. The discussion
furthermore contributes to exhibition co‐curation by focusing on Amazonian‐
European collaborations, which are under‐represented in Anglophone museological

Abstract: Abstract:This paper aims to examine engagement for a specific Instagram
practice of fashion curators: posts featuring Snapshots of Text. It builds upon
previous research, which indicates that fashion curators frequently post such
images of text on Instagram (Sand et al. (2022)) and represent a high impact
niche community particularly suited to qualitative research, whose communication
strategies have been underexplored. The study examines multimodal digital
communication by fashion curators from a design perspective, with a focus on
engagement. Its mixed-methods approach combines qualitative eye-tracking,
surveys, semi-structured interviews, participative netnography, thematic content
analysis, and data analytics. It draws on communication and museum studies to
gain a better understanding of how the visual elements of language are used and
received in the Instagram environment. Findings indicate that while engagement with
Snapshots of Text posts is higher with certain typographies and sizes, engagement
is also dependent on certain caption characteristics. Furthermore, they indicate that
a cross-pollination of digital fashion communication and museum studies research,
particularly museum label guidelines and visitor engagement studies, may benefit
both domains.

Abstract: The article is based on research that seeks to verify the role of Information
Design in the Digital Curation of Museu da Pessoa in Web 2.0, and the objective is
to reflect on its museological fact, life stories. In times of extended custody, Museu
da Pessoa stands out as a dynamic, interactive and collaborative memorial system.
Planned in and for Digital Curation, Information Design facilitates the indexing of
informational content as well as the graphic organization of such content, both top-
down and bottom-up, so that subjects not only recognize life stories as an object,
but also recognize them as human beings who are active in the information process,
reinforcing identity links through Information and Communication Technologies
(ICT). The need to acknowledge new means and strategies for Digital Curation in
museum institutions in the scope of Information Science justifies this article with
which we expect to enhance the understanding of the Museum as a model for the
preservation and interaction with life stories, autobiographical narratives, understood
in this context as cultural goods and memory heritage. As a result of the study,
it is verified that, through its methodologies and in convergence with Information
Science, Information Design creates a simulacrum of online, flowing and ubiquitous
museum in addition to the conditions for Digital Curation (top -down) aiming at the
representation and preservation of digital cultural objects, as well as their access to
the institution's information agents and bottom-up users, interactively, in the Web 2.0.

Informação na Curadoria Digital do Museu da Pessoa na Web 2.0 e o seu objetivo é

gráfica desses conteúdos, tanto top-down quanto bottom-up, a fim de que sujeitos
não apenas reconheçam histórias de vida como um objeto cultural tangível, um fato
museal, mas também para que se reconheçam enquanto seres humanos atuantes
no processo informacional, reforçando vínculos identitários por meio de Tecnologias
de Informação e Comunicação (TIC). A necessidade de se conhecer novos meios
e estratégias para a Curadoria Digital em instituições museológicas no âmbito
da Ciência da Informação justifica esse artigo com o qual espera-se favorecer a
compreensão do Museu como um modelo para a preservação e interação com
histórias de vida, narrativas autobiográficas, entendidas, neste contexto, como bens
culturais e patrimônio memorial. Como resultado do estudo, verifica-se que, por meio
de suas metodologias, e em convergência com a Ciência da Informação, o Design
da Informação cria um simulacro de museu online, em fluxo e ubíquo, bem como
condições para uma Curadoria Digital (top-down), tendo em vista a representação
e a preservação de objetos culturais digitais, assim como seu acesso, aos agentes
informacionais da instituição e aos internautas (bottom-up), interativamente, na Web
