What Is It?
4
Let’s go back to the underline words in the paragraph.
What do we call these words? What are vowel digraphs?
Vowel digraphs are two vowels that when placed
together generate one sound. This includes double vowels like the long
“oo” in “moon” or short “oo” in “foot”. Other vowel digraphs are formed
by two different vowels like “ai” in “rain” or “oa” in “boat”.
A. Vowel Digraphs Beginning with A
*ai or ay are almost always pronounced as long A -- /eɪ/
Example: bait, bay, brain, daily, fail, laid, maid, may, paid, pay,
praise,
raise, say, wait, way.
B. Vowel Digraph Beginning with E
1. ea is often pronounced /iː/ like long E
Example: beans, cheat, dream, each, easy, heal, leaf, leave, meat,
peas, reach, real, speak, team, treat.
However, ea is also commonly pronounced like a short E (/ɛ/),
especially words with 'ead'
Example: already, bread, breakfast, dead, head,
instead, measure, ready, spread, weather.
2. ee is pronounced with a long E (/iː/ )
Example: bee, deep, feed, feel, free, need, see, seed, steep, tree.
C. Vowel combinations Beginning with O
1. oa is pronounced with a long O (/oʊ/):
Example: boast, boat, coat, goal, soap, throat.
2. a. oo is pronounced /uː/
Example: food, room, school, soon, too, tool, zoo
b. oo is also pronounced as /ʊ/ as in book, good, look, stood,
took, understood.
