I had my first experience with a flood in late November last year. There had been a heavy
downpour for the past few days. Since it was the monsoon season, my family and I thought it was
a normal occurrence. To our dismay, the rain did not let up and soon, our neighbourhood was
flooded.
We were totally caught by surprise. We desperately tried to salvage our belongings but
the flood water had risen too fast. Muddy water was flowing fast into our home, submerging all
the furniture. In less than two hours, the flood swept away everything in its path. Almost all the
vehicles were half-submerged. Some residents climbed to the rooftops and waited for the rescue
boats. We also climbed to the rooftop. Later, we were taken by the search and rescue staff to a
flood relief centre. We stayed there for four days until the floods subsided.
It was a scary experience which I will never forget. We decided to prepare ourselves for a
flood during the monsoon season in the future..
