III. TARGET AREA BACKGROUND & PROBLEMS
Ashoka NGO Consultancy concentrated in 25 Adiwasi and rural villages of Nagpur District.
The major source of livelihood of the people in the District is Agriculture, Dairy and Allied
activities. Nagpur is also known for its backwardness in education and economy. Their
economy is subsistence as the natural resources of the District are meager to support its
population.
Among the population, women, children and handicapped people are the poorest of the poor.
They are purely depending upon their family. Handicapped people lack support from their
families as well as from the community. Government schemes reach them seldom.

Youth Skill Training Project
Recent Flood and torrential rain inundated and made a major portion of the land unfertile. This
2007 is really a hard period for these people as they look the government and non-governmental
organizations for some kind of support to enable their lives.
The total population of Maharashtra as of 1st March 2001 stood at 79,278,938 as per the
provisional results of the Census of India 2001. In terms of population it holds the Secound
position among the States and Union territories in the country. As against all India decadal
growth rate of population 27.44% during 1991-2001, in Maharashtra this has further slipped to
18.38% from 17.99% during 1981-1991. The sex ratio (i.e., the number of females per thousand
males) of population in the State has improved from 922 in the present census. The literacy rate
in the State has shown remarkable improvement. This has increased to 79.87% when compared
to 69.99% ten years back during 1991 Census.
Plight of the children
These children face the following problems in an age that is not to suitable to find solutions to
most of their problems: Lack of basic education makes them as illiterates, retarded growth in the
socio-psycho development of their life, early marriage and frequent pregnancies results poor
health for mothers, malnourished, under-weight babies, respiratory tract problems, learning
undesirable bad habits like smoking, pan chewing, drinking and live in dire poverty entangled
with despair.
Plight of the Youth
The present day youth were the earlier day child labourers, lack basic education, skills and vision
to lay down their future.
Plight of Women
Because of different factors like the lack of education, ignorance or a "Defective Value System"
the existing poverty status in the target areas is possible. Discrimination, violence against girls
and women are the worst forms of violence. Women's and girl's situation is hardly
understandable for outsiders. But to be born as a daughter a women has restrained from
education, socialization and participation in the decision making process. As a wife, a woman
has to procreate children for the husband and rear them. She has the obligation to procreate a
baby child; failure would result in deprivation of conjugal life with the husband. Still there are

many other forms of mental violence against women. Moreover, beatings and other forms of
physical violence are considered as normal practices in the hill-villages.
When girls or young women get married, also they are not supposed to stay with their birth
family. They are considered to live with the husband's family. This leads to the opinion, that
investment on girl's education is useless because it does not give any return to the parents.
Hence, often the boy child alone enjoys the investment on education and development. This
discrimination leads the girl to grow as illiterate, ignorant and inferior persons, which turn out in
poverty and a submissive status.
Health Condition
Health condition in the targeted villages is comparatively poor and needs more attention by the
government as well as by the non-governmental organizations. However, a number of factors
put the population of the target areas both at special risk for the poor health plight. These factors
include population density, rudimentary housing, dwindling ways of making a living, poor
sanitation and health care systems, and lagging literacy and education. Tribal People have also
traditionally been isolated from the rest of the district and are at the bottom of the region's socio-
economic ladder.
Population density and housing
The population density of the target areas is very high (1,047 per village) and the population
density per square kilometer averages 528 in the villages but along the coast, density is almost
three times that figure (1,668 per square kilometer). 97% of the targeted population dwells in
thatched huts that are easily damaged by the hot sun as well as rain. Most residents of these
villages do not even own the land on which they live.
Sanitation and health
Those living along coastline and in the targeted villages have some of the worst sanitation and
health indicators in Tamil Nadu state, according to the Bay of Bengal Programme for Sustainable
Fisheries. Morbidity, mortality, and frequency of illness are much higher among the targeted
villages and coastal communities, and particularly among women, than in the rest of the district.

Literacy and education
The targeted community also lags behind the general population of Maharashtra in literacy rates
and education levels. If they send the children to school at all, most families stop the education
of their children early, as the industry has the tendency to absorb young workers in large
numbers and they find themselves unable to do so because of their lack of education and
alternative skills. In these conditions, a cooperative society for women would solve most of their
problems and give them self-sufficiency.
IV. PROJECT RATIONALE
Approximately 36 million (35% of the total population of 1025 million) in the country, consists
of youth (between 15-24 years as per WHO definition). In 1981, the youth population was
approximately 125 million and 171 million at the beginning of 1991. It was over 230 million at
the beginning of 2001.
The following are the common problem among today’s youth:
Role and Value Conflicts
Pressures for Performance in Schools and Colleges
Career Decision and Unemployment
Coping with Pressures of Living
Emotional and Sexual Adjustment
Pressures of Dowry
Lack of knowledge on life.
Demand for the Trade Offered
The above mentioned courses are hot cakes that have massive market. Once these boys and girls
are trained they would be get employment in the IT booming Nagpur, IT Corridor, IT Park,
software companies like HCL, Infoysis, Cognizant,Wipro, Satyam Infoways, Sify, and Special
Economic Zones (SEZ) and other computer based companies and business houses.
For Tally
To date, over 200,000 students have taken advantage of the training offered through our vast
Tally Academy network. Apart from these authorized centres, there are an estimated 50,000 to
70,000 computer training centres that teach Tally. The formal education sector has also adopted
Tally as the default platform for ‘accounting on computers’.

Scope of Assistance for Job Placement
Ashoka NGO Consultancy would find the placement and organizing interviews and
placement for successful candidates. Through the Personnel Officer / Personnel Managers and
HR Managers Nice Foundation would organize interviews and job placements. We have good
tie ups with some of the software companies to find job placement for our trainees.
For Tally Course
Tally as an organisation had always given top priority to quality services. It is imperative that we
deliver the best to our clients, which is why our Placement Services offers placement only to
TCPs who are tested and certified by Tally. The TFAC exam can be taken at any authorised
Tally Academy in our countrywide network. Today, through Tally’s Placement Services, a large
number of Tally Certified Professionals have been assisted in finding suitable career
opportunities across small, medium and large enterprises in India.
This project aims to address the above issues both in institutionalise programmes and out-reach
activities targeted towards the youth on development.
