Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 10 Self-Learning Module on Electric Motor vs Electric

Generator

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

____ Cooled water is pumped back into the
earth. The process repeats.
____ Wells are drilled into the earth to
pump steam / hot water to the surface.
____ The steam cools in the cooling tower
and condenses back to water.
____ Pressure drops causing water to turn
into steam.
LESSON

ELECTRIC MOTOR VS ELECTRIC GENERATOR

In 1820, Hans Christian Oersted, a Danish Physicist, discovered that

magnetism was produced by current-carrying wires. It means electric current
produces magnetic field.
Then, in 1831, Michael Faraday of England and Joseph Henry of United
States found out that moving a wire in a close circuit across a magnetic field
will make electric current flow in the circuit. It means magnetism produces
current.
The two words, Electricity and Magnetism, are very much related to each
other. There are two electromagnetic devices; the electric motor and electric
generator. These devices have similarities and differences.
Electric Motor is a device which converts
electrical energy into mechanical energy.
Look at the picture in figure 1.
If you will be asked, how these appliances
work, you would probably say “through
electricity”. You’re right! Electric current is
needed by these appliances in order to work!
The motor of the fan converts electric energy
into mechanical energy.

The reverse conversion is a device

that converts mechanical energy into
electrical energy. Generators generate
electricity. Figure 2 shows a power
plant generator.

One of the sources of mechanical energy

is water turbine. Look at Figure 3. Water
turns turbine. This causes motion and
mechanically makes generator works. Thus,
generator produces electricity.
Other sources are steam turbine, gas
turbine, wind turbine and even cranks.
Study the two figures below.

Motor and Generator have common parts. This means the device can act
as a motor or as a generator depending on what is in the input form, may
either be electrical energy or mechanical energy. Generally, motor converts
electrical energy into mechanical energy while generator converts mechanical
energy into electrical energy.
Motor and Generator have similarities. Both have essential parts like
magnet coils and spinning part. They work on the principle of rotation and
convert energies. They are based from the principle of a magnetic field and
electric field and uses concept of electric current at any point. They are
electromagnetic devices.

Here are the essential parts and functions of electric motor and electric
generator.
Armature- coil of wire that turns in the magnetic field

Brushes- copper metal chips that conduct electricity from the source to the
Commutator
Commutator- a split ring that reverses the current every half turn

Field Magnets- bar magnets that produces magnetic field

Now, let’s have a table comparison for you to easily understand the
differences between the electric motor and electric generator.

Examples of electric motors are the ones to generate electricity. These devices
used in refrigerators, elevators, fans, e- supply electricity in industries and
bikes, and pumps, etc. households. These are used for general
lighting and powering batteries, etc.
