Melinoe
Notes
Melinoe is a simple pair of fingerless mittens in stranded colourwork. They start with a
textured garter and corrugated ribbing cuff. A thumb gusset is worked with simple
increases. The main motif consists of geometric dotted angles with a horned goat on the
center and the top of the mitten and of the thumb are finished like the cuff for neat edges.
The pattern provides help on the colourwork method as well as on how to calculate your
gauge to get a different fit.

Yarn :
You will need two colours of sport / DK weight yarn in the following amounts :
MC : 100 meters
CC : 115 meters
The sample is knit with Maison Corlène Corlene in Léon (MC) and Philomène (CC).
Needles :
Main Fabric : 2.5 mm (US 1.5) circular needles with appropriate length to knit in the
round or magic loop or DPNs.
Ribbing : 2 mm (US 0) circular needles with appropriate length to knit in the round or
magic loop or DPNs.
or sizes required to get gauge
Gauge :
24 sts x 34 rnds per 10 cm – 4" with larger needles in stranded knitting after blocking
Size :
Finished circumference : 18 cm - 7"
Finished length from cuff to top : 21 cm – 8 ¼"
Finished length from thumb position to top : 5.5 cm – 2 ¼"
You can get a slightly different size by working at a different gauge, whether you still use
sport or choose to knit with a different yarn weight. A tighter gauge will make smaller
mittens while a looser gauge will make larger ones.
Measure your hand at its widest point (under the fingers). For a snug fit, pick a size that
will give you up to 2 cm – ¾" negative ease. For a comfortable fit, pick a size that matches
your measurements.
Here is the formula to determine at what gauge you need to work for the desired
circumference :
400 / desired circumference in cm – " = number of st you need per 10 cm – 4"
Notions :
Stitch markers, tapestry needle and scissors
Scrap yarn to place st on hold
Row counter recommended
Techniques used :
Stranded knitting with two colours and floats to catch
Corrugated ribbing
Thumb gusset with simple increases
Pattern includes charted instructions

Abbreviations :
– MC : main colour / CC : contrast colour
– CO : cast-on
– st(s) : stitch(es)
– rnd : round
– BOR : beginning of round
– m : marker
– pm : place marker
– k : knit stitch / p : purl stitch
– m1R : make 1 right, lift the bar between the stitches onto the left needle from back to
front, knit through the front loop (1 inc)
– m1L : make 1 left, lift the bar between the stitches onto the left needle from front to
back, knit through the back loop (1 inc)
Colourwork :
Catching floats : in sport weight, you can catch floats when skipping more than 6 stitches.
You may do it more often if you prefer, just make sure not to catch a float in the same place
in two consecutive rounds.
Colour dominance : CC will form the motifs while MC will be the background colour. To
have consistent colour dominance : hold CC to the left and always carry it under MC
without twisting the strands.
Reading charts :
Knitting in the round, always read the Chart from right to left.

Cuff : Thumb :

using a stretchy cast-on method like the stitches in the corner of the thumb.

Join to work in the round and PM for BOR. Bind-off all stitches knitwise using a simple
stretchy bind-off.
Work the cuff chart.
To check your fit, you can try on the mitten Finishing :
once you've made about 3-4 cm – 1 ¼-1 ½" Weave in all ends, closing any potential
of the cuff. holes at the base of thumb, and block the
mittens.
Hand :
Switch to larger needles.
Start working the mitten chart.
If needed, place a marker after the first part
of the chart to indicate the side of the
mitten. Notice that the top side of the
mitten has more stitches than the palm
side.
Make sure to knit one right-hand mitten
and one left-hand mitten.
Thumb Gusset
Starting on round 10 you will start the
thumb gusset by increasing 2 st every 3 rd
round as indicated on the chart.
On round 37 : work the first side of the
mitten, place the 18 thumb sts on hold,
work to end.
Top edge :
Switch to smaller needles.
Work the top chart.
