CASE STUDY BASED QUESTIONS ON MENSURATION
CLASS VIII
1) An aquarium is in the form of a cuboid whose external measures are 80 cm x 30 cm x 40 cm. The base
is to be covered with black paper. The side faces and back face is to be covered with red paper. The
cost of red paper is Rs. 4 per 100cm2.Based on the following information, answer the following
questions.
a) Find the area of the black paper that is to be used to cover the base.
b) Find the area of the paper required for the back face.
c) Find the total cost of paper required to cover the side faces.
d) What is the area of the front face?
SOLUTION HINTS:
(a) Area of the black paper used to cover the base: c) Total cost of the red paper required to cover the side faces:
The base of the cuboid is a rectangle with: Each side face is a rectangle with dimensions Height × Length, and there are
Area=Length × Breadth =80×30=2400 cm2 two side faces.
Area of one side face=40×80=3200 cm2
(b) Area of the paper required for the back face:
Total area of both side faces = 2×3200=6400 cm2
The back face of the cuboid is a rectangle with:
Total area to be covered with red paper (back face + both side faces):
Area=Height × Breadth =40×30=1200 cm2
6400+1200=7600 cm2
Cost of red paper: Rs. 4 per 100 cm²
(d) Area of the front face:
Cost for 7600 cm² red paper = Rs. 304
The front face is identical to the back face, Area=1200 cm2
2) Raman, a painter, always donated one-fifth of his income to an orphanage. Once he got a contract
of painting a house having tree rooms of dimensions (10m × 12m × 3.5m), (8m × 6m × 3.5m), and
(7m × 5m × 3.5m). He charged ₹30 per m² for his work.
a) How much money did Raman earn?
b) Find the amount of the money he gave to the orphanage?
SOLUTION HINTS:
For a cuboidal room, the area to be painted includes:
Four walls → Using the formula: Wall Area=2× Height × (Length + Breadth)
Ceiling Area → Ceiling Area=Length × Breadth
ROOM 1 (10m × 12m × 3.5m)
Wall area: 2×3.5× (10 + 12) = 2×3.5×22 = 154 m2
Ceiling area: 10 × 12 = 120 m2
Total area for Room 1: 154+120 = 274 m2
Find the area of all the 3 Rooms in this way.
Total Area to be painted = 274+146+119=539 m2
Since he charges ₹30 per m², his total earnings:
a) 539 × 30= Rs. 16,170
b) Raman donates one-fifth of his income:
16,170/5 = Rs. 3,234
3) Mohan decides to prepare a bird feeder for the thirsty birds
3)during summer. He found a flexible black colored plastic rectangular
sheet 44cm X 15 cm. He rolled it along its length and joined the two
opposite ends using a tape. He wanted to have a circular base for
this cylinder. He got a square sheet of 15 cm x 15 cm and he cut the
base of the cylinder from it. Based on this information, answer the
following questions
a) The curved surface area of the cylinder formed is
i) 540 cm2 ii) 560cm2 iii)640 cm2 iv) 660 cm2
b) The radius of the base of the cylinder is
i) 2 cm ii) 3.5 cm iii) 7 cm iv) 10 cm
c) The area of the circular base required for the cylinder is
i)154 cm2 ii) 216 cm2 iii) 260 cm2 iv) 308cm2
d) How much will be the area of the square sheet left unused
after removing the circular base of the cylinder from it?
i)69 cm2 ii)71 cm2 iii)83 cm2 iv)91 cm2
SOLUTION HINTS:
(a) Curved Surface Area (CSA) of the Cylinder (c) Area of the Circular Base
When the rectangular sheet is rolled along length, the circumference of the base The area of a circle is given by:
CSA=2πrh, thus r = 7 cm Area=πr2 =3.14×49=153.86≈154 cm2
Now, calculating CSA =2π (7)(15) =2×3.14×7×15 Correct answer: (i) 154 cm²
= 659.4≈660 cm2
Correct answer: (iv) 660 cm² (d) Area of Square Sheet Left Unused
• Area of the square sheet: 15×15=225 cm2
• Area of the circular base removed: 154 cm2
(b) Radius of the Base of the Cylinder
From previous calculation:
• Unused area: 225−154=71 cm2
r=7 cm Correct answer: (ii) 71 cm²
Correct answer: (iii) 7 cm
