MERCY | Genesis 1

If you’re starting this journey of reading the Bible on any other day than January 1st, I
say to you, “Happy New Year!” Why?

Because as we learn in Revelation, God is making all things new. He is constantly

renewing our lives, and one of the ways He does this is by renewing His mercy every
single morning. What is mercy? Mercy comes from two Latin words (merces and
misericordia) which mean reward or wages, and pity or compassion.

Mercy is showing compassion or forgiveness toward someone who deserves

punishment. Mercy is different from grace. Grace gives us what we don’t deserve. Mercy
withholds what we do deserve.

We will see God’s mercy on display from the get go in the way that He holds back from
giving us what we deserve, which is death and instead chooses to forgive us and show us
compassion. So we should live every day as if it is day 1. Day 1. Day 1 of the new year. Day
1 of the week.

Because every day that we wake up and are still living and breathing is proof of His
mercy. He is giving us another chance to make this day better than yesterday. Heart

Now that we’ve seen God’s heart for rest, work, free will, and relationships… Heart

Seeing that God has established boundaries for our good and not to cage us in… Heart

God’s heart beats with justice, mercy, and grace in this chapter. He will not compromise
His holiness by tolerating sin, but He will demonstrate compassion and faithfulness in

DAY 001 | GEN. 1-3

Heavenly Father, We stand in awe of who you are today.

Our Creator, our Redeemer, our Sustainer. From the beginning of time, your
heart has beat with love, justice, and mercy for us. Even when humanity failed in
the garden, you pursued us anyway with a beautiful promise of redemption,
giving us hope through Jesus.

Because of that victory, we too, can crush his head with our own bruised heel. He
can try to take us down, and he may injure our hearts, but he has no hold on us,
because we have been set free by the blood of the Lamb. For that we cry out,
“Hallelujah!”

Lord, we thank you for weaving the story of scripture together as one continuous
narrative that ultimately points to your faithfulness and grace. But what we are
seeing more and more, is how you have woven us into that same story. You
breathe life into these pages every single day just as you breathed life into Adam.
From creation to the cross and into eternity, you are sovereign over all things.
Please help us to trust in your perfect plan, even when life feels a little bit chaotic
or uncertain.

Father, we confess, that like Adam and Eve, we sometimes hide in our sin and
shame. But thank you for always seeking after us and calling us back into
relationship with you.

Thank you for your mercy and provision, and clothing us in grace and
righteousness. We don’t ever want to compromise your holiness by way of our
sin. Teach us to respond to your love with obedience, trust, and worship. Let us
be fruitful and multiply, filling the earth with more and more who will love you
and reflect your glory.

Please strengthen us in the face of temptation, to resist the enemy and his
schemes. I pray that we will continue to seek your face daily so that we can find
you each day in the world. Your Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our
paths. Let it guide us this year, illuminating each and every step that we take.
And remind us daily that we are sealed by your Spirit and held by your unfailing
love.
What a beautiful day it is to come back to the beginning, having a full taste of
your redemptive plan and now getting to grow deeper in our knowledge. We look
forward to the day that the full mystery is revealed to us. That will be the day
when the enemy is done, when sin and death are no more, and you will reign in
perfect peace. Until then, empower us to live as your faithful witnesses, sharing
the hope of redemption in a world that is so desperately in need of your light.
