over the world have come seeking freedom, opportunity, and a better life. From the earliest
settlers to today's newcomers, immigrants have played a crucial role in shaping America's

A Brief History of Immigration

Immigration to America began long before the country was officially founded. In the 1600s,
European settlers arrived, followed by waves of people from Ireland, Germany, Italy, and

persecution, and they helped build cities, railroads, and industries.

However, not all immigrants were welcomed equally. In 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act
became the first major law to restrict immigration based on nationality, targeting Chinese
workers who had contributed significantly to building the transcontinental railroad . Later, in
