What Is A Conductor Casing

A conductor casing is a large diameter pipe installed in a bore to prevent sediments and shallow groundwater from contaminating the bore, extending 80-150 feet below the surface. Its necessity depends on geotechnical factors such as soil type and groundwater levels. In well-drained or consolidated soil areas, a conductor casing may not be required.

What Does Conductor Casing Mean?

A conductor casing is the first and largest in diameter pipe installed in the bore. It extends 80-150
feet below the Earth's surface and is cemented throughout its full length. A conductor casing has two
primary purposes. The first is to prevent unconsolidated sediments from entering the bore and the
second is to prevent shallow groundwater, such as rainwater-based infiltration, from entering and
contaminating the bore or interfering with the services or facilities placed within the bore.

Trenchlesspedia Explains Conductor Casing

The conductor casing Is dependent on geotechnical reports for the area, its soil type, slope, soil
consolidation factors related to the likelihood of rainwater infiltration. The type of utility to be installed
in the bore is also taken into account, along with shallow groundwater levels, the depth and proximity
of water wells, and other shallow hydrologic conditions.

A conductor casing may not be necessary in all circumstances, for example, in locations where the
soil is well consolidated or well-drained, or where rainwater infiltration is not likely to be a problem.
