Religious Education

Form 4 Lesson 2
28th January 2022

Topic: Ageism

At the end of the lesson you should be able to:

● Define ageism
● Have an understanding of the main problems associated with ageism
● Explain the different religious views on ageism

❖ Ageism – is the discrimination against people simply because of their age.

Three (3) main problems associated with getting old:

1. Failing health – diseases like arthritis, rheumatism and bronchitis are more likely to affect the
elderly. Older people in their seventies (70’s) are seven times more likely to visit their doctor than
someone in their twenties (20’s).

2. Loneliness – many elderly people live on their own, the vast majority being women.

3. Poverty – once a person retires they experience a great drop in income. The older the person the
poorer they are likely to be especially single and widowed women.

Is old age all doom and gloom?

❖ Growing old is not total doom and gloom. Elderly people may find that they have more leisure
time, they take up new hobbies/interests and find great pleasure and joy from interacting with
their grandchildren. Old age can bring a sense of deep peace and tranquility.

NB Long life is seen as a blessing and a reward given by God.

Old Age and Religion

1. Christianity – looking after the elderly is an important duty. The 5th commandment says “Honour thy
father and thy mother”. Respect for parents is an important part of Christian family life.

2. Judaism – respect for parents and looking after the elderly is an important duty in Judaism just as it
is in Christianity. The Psalmist in the Jewish scriptures pleads with God “Do not cast me off in old
age, when my strength fails, do not forsake me” (Psalm 71:9).

3. Islam – Muslims are taught to respect and honour the older members of their family. They do not
consider sending the elderly away to spend the end of their lives in a nursing home.
