Freedom Writers
The film “ Freedom Writers” tells the true story of a teacher and a group of
young students. Erin Gruwell, who manages to change the lives of a
group of students who belong to gangs or live surrounded by violence,
manages to do so through writing and empathy in a school setting rife
with social exclusion and racism. Despite the problems, she creates a
safe space for the students to express themselves and talk about their
personal experiences.
From my perspective, I admire the way the teacher handled the situation
with the young people. I was struck by how, with dedication and respect,
she was able to completely change the attitude of students considered
“ lost.” And this group of students, feeling heard, began to gain
confidence and shared their problems with Erin. I was moved by the
stories of each of the students, like that of Eva, who struggled to break
free from the cycle of violence and loyalty learned in her environment.
The film addresses important themes, among which the one that caught
my attention the most: empathy, self- improvement, and the teacher-
student relationship. It’s important to know that an emotionally
supportive environment is essential between teacher and student. Erin
demonstrates this by using rarely used methods, such as journaling,
which helps me connect more with her students and better understand
their situation.
The film Freedom Writers made me reflect on the extremely important role
of educators as guides for change. As a student myself, it inspires me to
value my opportunities more, and as a teacher in the future, it motivates
me to create safe spaces where every student feels their story matters.
