Otto Messmer’s

n 1919, while working for the

Pat Sullivan Studios, Otto
Messmer created a cat that
he drew all black. That cat was
soon named Felix. He became
the biggest star of silent
animated film cartoons and
within a few years appeared in
color in his own syndicated
Sunday comic strip.
Anthology reprints began
in the 1920s and by the late
*30s his strips reappeared in
newsstand comicbooks. During ===

and drawn by Messmer).
Later, the title changed
hands and was picked up by
Toby Press, who continued |
Dell’s numbering system. =
Otto aes submitted
an engaging 12-page story to
his new editors on November © 1991 King Features Synch
2, 1950, that he had written, 7 Mi.
pencilled and inked called
“The Shutter Bug;’ to be
the lead story for Felix the Cat #20. (Toby Press’ first, cover dated May,
1951). Thus began a new era for Messmer: a bold, uninhibited period of zany
wackiness that produced far out and highly imaginative, fresh and funny comic
book adventures that ran for 42 issues!* :
