Text 1
Social norms are the implicit social rules that govern behavior within a community. Norms ar
e not directly established; instead, they develop over time as people go about their daily beha
viors, sense people's reactions to those behaviors, and observe what other people are doing. S
ocial norms differ, depending on the group of people, community, or culture. What is conside
red fully normal, even admirable, in one group may be met with disapproval in another (e.g.,
offices where casual dress is normal vs. offices where everyone must wear a suit). According
to psychologist Robert Cialdini, people are constantly looking for "social proof" to guide thei
r own behavior. They look for clues to what other people are doing in order to understand the
appropriate behavior in a given situation. Social proof of what is acceptable is a particularly p
owerful guide to behavior when the situation is ambiguous or new.
In relation to social norms, one of the big challenges we face is creating a sustainable culture
where so many unsustainable actions are considered perfectly normal and even something to
strive for: driving alone, living in a very large home, eating foods that have traveled long dist
ances, eating meat at every meal, having a weed-free green grass lawn, and continuously sho
pping for new consumer goods. Sustainable behaviors, such as buying second-hand or taking
short showers, on the other hand, are often seen as lower or undesirable in status.
Social norms create opportunities for change; for one thing, they are dynamic and constantly
shifting (just think about fashion trends). The goal for those of us who want to bring about a
more sustainable society is to quickly bring sustainable behaviors into the realm of normal, ac
ceptable one, and something people aspire to. How do we accomplish this? We need to give p
eople evidence, social proof, that sustainable behavior is acceptable and desirable.

Schools must incorporate technology into daily teaching to realize the benefits. The daily use
of technology in core classes correlates highly to the desirable education success measures (E
SMs). Daily technology use is a top-five indicator of better discipline, better attendance, and i
ncreased college attendance.
In 1:1 (one child one laptop) schools, daily use of technology in core curriculum classes rang
es from 51% to 63%. Unfortunately, many 1:1 schools report using the technology on only a
weekly basis or less often for many classes. It may appear surprising that in 40% of 1:1 schoo
ls, where every student has a laptop, students do not use the technology on a daily basis.
The anecdotal evidence suggests a few answers: first, some schools move into 1:1 computing
based on top-down directives and do not enjoy stakeholder buy-in. Second, many schools hav
e inadequate levels of professional development. America's Digital Schools 2006 provides str
ong support for this argument. Third, schools buy the hardware but no courseware. In one lar
ge implementation, the hardware vendor who won the bid allocated only 50 cents for softwar
e, requiring the schools to supplement the software out of their own budget. Fourth, the lapto
ps are used for less transformative activities. Next, computer use is limited to tool use, such a
s PowerPoint or word processing, with some limited web browsing. Broader uses including di
gital content with meaningful integration are not employed.
Some educators have asked if technology has to be used daily to be effective or if daily use is
overkill. If the use of technology is just tinkering around the edges, daily use may not matter
or produce better results. However, it matters a great deal if technology is embedded in the sc
hool. If applied, it produces results beyond those expected by chance.

The green movement is catching on in many pockets of the world. This is especially true in th

are causing everyday people to look for ways to reduce their carbon footprint, Purchasing en
vironmentally-friendly property is a good investment for those who are concerned about their
own health and the well-being of the earth. Based on this trend, entire districts, known as eco-
communities, are being designed with green mitiatives in mind. Dockside Green in Victoria,
British Columbia, Canada is one of these communities. Its goal is to become the world's first
zero-emissions neighborhood.
Builders of Dockside Green have the environment in mind with every choice they make. The

or building materials, such as paints and wood, are natural and non-toxic, Eco-conscious buil
ders use bamboo wherever possible because it is durable and does not require pesticides to gr

Energy efficiency is one of the top priorities in eco-communities, such as Dockside Green. N
ot only do energy efficient appliances and light fixtures reduce the environmental impact of h
eating and hot water, they also save residents and business owners money. Dockside Green cl
aims that home owners will use 55% less energy than average residents in Canada. Though th
ey are sharing space by investing in condo-style living, residents will have individual utility
metres. Studies show that people use approximately 20% less energy when they are billed for
exactly what they use. In addition, water is treated at Dockside Green and reused on site for fl
ushing toilets.

Planners of eco-communities such as Dockside Green must take the future into account. Dock
side Green will reuse 90% of its construction waste. They also plan to continue using local su
ppliers for all of their transport and maintenance needs. This is a great way to reduce emissio
ns. Dockside residents will be encouraged to make use of a mini transit system and buy into t

em that will use renewable biomass instead of fossil fuels.

Before engineers dreamed of eliminating drivers in cars, they imagined eliminating the side
mirrors. Now a long-sought solution looks closer to finally stripping cars of side mirrors. Ma
ny automakers demonstrate video systems hat replace the Mickey Mouse ears with cameras.
Continental, a major parts and systems supplier to automaken, Was one of them.
In a customized Mercedes-Benz CLS, Continental demonstrated how its system would work.
Thumb-size video cameras on the exterior of the car replace the side mounted mirrors and use
interior screens on the left and right side of the dashboard to deliver views of what is next to a
nd behind the car. The screens are near where a driver Would normally look to check a mirror ,
and the camera views are wider than what a physical mirror can provide, eliminating blind sp
ots along the side of the car. The cameras, which can automatically adjust to reduce glare fro
m sunlight or increase brightness at night, are also helpful in tight parking spots.
Technology suppliers hope that regulations requiring old-fashioned physical mirrors will be a
mended, Philipp Hoffmann, BMW's project manager for camera monitor systems expected to
begin road testing of the mirrorless systems in Europe this year, quickly followed by addition
al testing in Asia. He remained hopeful that the United States would follow soon.
He may have a good reason to be optimistic. Daimler AG, parent company of Mercedes-Benz,
is already testing a couple of autonomous tractor-trailers in Nevada that use large high-defini
tion screens instead of side mirrors. Also, BMW recently received an exemption from the Tra
nsportation Department in the U.S. to allow it to deploy an automatic parking feature that ena
bles a BMW 7 Series car to park itself, while the driver stands on the curb. It is a feature the c
ompany demonstrated only a year ago.
Using cameras instead of physical mirrors could also end dangling damaged mirrors. To repla
ce a typical mirror can be expensive as much as $946 on a 2015 Acura RLX, according to the
insurance institute. However, Mr. McConnell at Continental noted potential savings in buildin
g cars that no longer need the structural support for side-mounted mirrors.

Why Should I Care? When you are first diagnosed with a chronic condition such as
chronic kidney disease, it can change the way you see yourself, and create feelings of anxiety,
disbelief or denial. These feelings are normal and perfectly fine to experience, and
acknowledging that you feel this way can be the first step towards controlling these thoughts.
You are still the person that you see in the mirror, that is parent, friend, son/daughter, a
brother/sister, and you are not the condition that you have been diagnosed with. Ignoring
these feelings though could lead to additional problems down the road.
Just because you have anxiety or experience mood changes does not mean you have a
mental health disorder. As we know that mood swings happen and can be influenced by many
things like a long line at the post office or someone cutting you off in traffic. However, there
is a linkage between mental health and chronic health disorders. According to The National
Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 26.2% of Americans suffer from mental disorders
and 68% of adults with mental disorders also have chronic medical conditions. Mental
disorders and chronic medical conditions can go hand in hand. Please, do not feel ashamed if
you are having any mental condition symptoms, as the number above illustrates, you are not
alone.
Even though patients with kidney disease are at an increased risk for mental health
issues, the numbers that are reported are likely still low due to under reporting and missed
diagnoses. Out of the 26% of Americans who suffer mental disorders, an estimated additional
8 million are still walking around undiagnosed. This could be due to many factors, but the
negative view of mental health disorders at least plays a role in this.
Since mental health and chronic diseases are closely related, it is important to note
that having a chronic disease can increase symptoms of mental disorders and can also lead to
the development of another chronic disease. Positively, most mental health conditions are
highly treatable and treatments can range from just talking to others in a support group to
receiving medications and other professional services.

A. The number of patients suffering from kidney disease is unknown. This is an example of
the result of negative attitude toward mental disorder.
B. Having a chronic disease increases the possibility of the patients to get mental disorder.
Even a slight disturbance to their daily activities can trigger their mood swings.
C. Anxiety or mood changes are not the main symptoms of mental disorder. Statistics have
shown many Americans suffer mental disorder. This needs Immediate action.
D. The feelings of anxiety, disbelief, or denial are the result of suffering chronic diseases.
Patients experience changes of mood. Studies have been conducted related to this symptom.
E. There is a close relation between mental health and chronic diseases. Some patients

There are two crucial points on the topic of education and training of future education

ormance; and the psychology undergraduate course curriculum. On the first point, it is unders
tood and defended that there is a big difference between being an educational psychologist on
the staff of a school, and acting as a school psychologist in a private office outside the institut
ion. Even though the profession is defined by education (degree) and the purpose of the work
(responding to school's demands), it is understood that the local/position in the which the prof

nts are required in the process of the individual's education/training, such as: knowledge abou
t educational policies, organization and laws; training to deal with institution dynamic and co

The integration of technology and media can enhance early childhood practice.
Successful integration of technology and media into early childhood programs involves the
use of resources such as computers and the Internet in daily classroom practices. True
integration occurs when the use of technology and media becomes routine and transparent
when the focus of a child or educator is on the activity or exploration itself and not on the
technology or media being used. Technology integration has been successful when the use of
technology and media supports the goals of educators and programs for children provides
children with digital tools for learning and communicating and helps improve child
outcomes.
As the lives of children, parents, families, and educators are infused with technology
and media, early childhood classrooms can benefit from the possibilities of extending
children's learning through judicious use of these tools. As part of the overall classroom plan,
technology and interactive media should be used in ways that support existing dassroom
developmental and educational goals rather than in ways that distort or replace them. For
example, drawing on a touch screen can add to children's graphic representational
experiences: manipulating colorful acerate shapes on a light table allows children to explore
color and shape.
By focusing on technology and interactive media as tools-not as ends in and of
themselves-teachers can avoid the passive and potentially harmful use of non-interactive,
linear screen media that is inappropriate in early childhood settings. Intentionality is a key to
developmentally appropriate use.
Exciting new resources in today's technology-rich world represent the next frontier in
digital learning for our youngest citizens, leaving it to talented educators and caring adults to
determine how best to leverage each new technology as an opportunity for children's learning
in ways that are developmentally appropriate.

34.Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent
that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or
increased health problems. Body mass index (BMI), a measurement which compares
weight and height, defines people as overweight (pre-obese) when their BMI is between
25 kg/m² and 30 kg/m³, and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m².

Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2
diabetes, breathing difficulties during sleep, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.
Obesity is most commonly caused by a combination of excessive dietary calories, lack of
physical activity, and genetic susceptibility although a few cases are caused primarily by
genes, endocrine disorders, medications or psychiatric illness. Evidence to support the
view that some obese people eat little yet gain weight due to a slow metabolism is
limited. On average obese people have a greater energy expenditure than their thin
counterparts due to the energy required to maintain an increased body

mass. The primary treatment for obesity is dieting and physical exercise. To supplement
this, or in case of fallure, anti-obesity drugs may be taken to reduce appetite or inhibit
fat absorption. In severe cases, surgery is performed or an Intragastric balloon is placed
to reduce stomach volume and/or bowel length, leading to earlier satiation and reduced
ability to absorb nutrients from food.

Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing prevalence in

adults and children, and authorities view it as one of the most serious public health
problems of the 21st century. Obesity is stigmatized in much of the modern world
(particularly in the Western world), though it was widely perceived as a symbol of
wealth and fertility at other times in history, and still is in some parts of the world.

The word gambut (peat) is taken from the name of a village, Desa Gambut (now
Gambut sub-district), which is located about 10 km east of Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. It
is at this place that for the first time, rice has been successfully cultivated in peat solled rice
fields. In the soil taxonomy system, peat soils are grouped into a separate soll order called
histosols, which means that the land is predominantly composed of organic soil materials in
the form of the remains of plant tissues. The nature and the characteristics of peat soils can be
determined based on their physical and chemical properties

Gambut has dark brown to blackish colors. Although its basic materials are gray,
brown or reddish, after decomposition, the dark humic compounds will appear. Furthermore,
based on the weight of the contents, peat soil or gambut, which has undergone further
decomposition, has a content weight ranging from 0.2 to 0.3 g/cm³. Due to the low content
weight, peat has a large capacity as water storage, about 2-4 times its dry weight. In fact,
moss peat that has not been decomposed can store up to 12 or 15 even 20 times more water
than its own weight. In addition, peat soil has a large absorption area, which is up to 4 times
greater than montmorillonite clay
Next, peal soil has acidic reaction properties. Decomposition of organic matters will
produce organic acids that accumulate in the body of the soil hence increasing the acidity of
the peat soil. Generally, peat soil shows real resistance to changes in pH when compared to
mineral soils. As a result, peat soil requires more limestone to increase the pH at the same
level of the value of mineral soll. Thus, peat soil requires a higher dose of fertilizers than
mineral soil
Furthermore, based on the nutrients contained in it, peat soil is a type of nutrient-poor
soil. High levels of N and organic matters in peat soils are also accompanied by a high N
nitrification process so that the activity of heterotrophic organisms is not well stimulated and
the organisms active in the nitrification process can carry out their activities. Therefore, the
levels of P (phosphorus) and K (potassium) of peat solls are generally lower than that of the
mineral soils. Also, the plants cultivated on the peat soll are very responsive to the
fertilization using P and K.

The use of modem chemical drugs and herbal medicines, including herbs,
simultaneously to treat certain diseases must be exercised carefully. Random combined use
can lead to health worsening. Clinical trials showed the use of simvastatin as anti-cholesterol
drugs or a mixture of guava leaves, Javanese turmeric (temulawak) roots, and Dutch teak
leaves as traditional medicine gave good results if they are used separately. But, if combined,
the results are harmful. Similar harms happen in the combined use of metformin and black tea
to treat diabetes. If both are used individually, they can reduce blood sugar levels in large
quantities. However, if combined, the decrease in blood sugar content is actually very small.
As for herbal medicines, besides being absorbed more slowly by the body, sometimes
they are binding substances from chemical drugs. As a result, the effect of chemical drug is
not optimal. Ginseng should not be combined with heart drugs because it will worsen the
heart condition. In addition, garlic, which is also an anticoagulant herbal medicine, should not
be combined with chemical drugs such as acetasol or clopidopril because It will cause
bleeding.
Indonesians know and realize the benefits of medicinal plants for a long time.
However, the traditional Indonesian medicine industry has not developed. Currently there are
6 phytopharmacologically based medicines and 31 standardized herbal medicines. The herbs
in Indonesia are thousands in number. Jamu is the lowest level in the grouping of the
Indonesian traditional medicines, followed by standardized herbal medicines and
phytopharmacologically based medicines as the highest level. To improve the status of herbal
medicines to standardized herbal medicines, there must be a non-clinical test. To be
phytopharmacologically based medicines, clinical trials and non-clinical trials must be
carried out on these medicines. Because of this, many herbal producers are reluctant to
improve the status or their products because even without such complicated procedures, the
herbal has already sold well. Manufacturers will only increase the status of their products to
standardized herbal medicines or phytopharmacologically based medicines to ensure the
safety of their products to consumers and export interests.

Dogs are one of the smartest animals and are often called 'man's best friend'. As well
as being a pet, many trained dogs also become professionals to help police, airport officials,
and people with special needs. It is this special ability that has always been an attraction for
experts to research dogs more scientifically and deeply. As reported in TIME, one of the
experts who was interested in it was neuroscientist Gregory Berns from Emory University in
Atlanta, United States. Not just studying their behavior. Berns specifically trained dogs to sit
quietly Inside Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) so that the way their brain worked could
be scanned and seen. Without being anesthesized or put to sleep, the fully awake dog was told
to sit while the MRI scanner was checking their brain. For the scanning purpose, large
hardware was needed so that the software could function optimally. The result of the scanning
indicated that the size of the brain is the determining factor. The dog's brain size is relatively
large. Human brain is considered very big, reaching a proportion of 1:50 of the average total
body weight. The size of the dog's brain turned out to be 1:125 of the dog's total body weight.
It is the ratio found in almost all types of puppies. In comparison with other animals, the size
of a horse's brain is only 1:600 and the size of a lion's brain is slightly better al 1:550 of the
total body weight. So, among other animals, the size of a dog's brain is indeed quite large and
can accommodate more cognitive and affective development.
Dogs are very sensitive to tones. From changes in tone, dogs can learn and distinguish
human words. Berns's research aimed to find out how dogs learn human language: when dogs
hear a word, is it just an auditory stimulation or does it have more meanings? He spent a year
observing the brain activities of the dogs when they heard familiar words or unclear chatter.
From the tone, dogs can learn to distinguish human words, As with human babies, puppies
respond more to humans' high-pitched speech than low-pitched one. Researchers in New
York and France also found that high notes really helped puppies learn words. But as adults.
dogs no longer choose high octaves as they did when they were young.

Some Indonesians may miss something when their meal does not come up with
chilies or chili chunks. The hottest ones are the most sought after by chili lovers. Not just
spicy, chilies turn out to contain some important nutrients such as energy, carbohydrates,
sugar, fiber, fat, protein, vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin C, iron, magnesium, potassium,
water, and capsaicin. Capsaicin is what makes chill taste spicy and hot. Despite its spicy taste,
chilies turn out to have many health benefits.
The first benefit of chilies is for stomach health. Capsaicin in chilies can nourish the
digestion by increasing the digestive juices in the stomach and fighting bacteria that cause
infection. In addition, chilies also help fight diarrhea caused by bacterial infections.
Chilies can also reduce pain. Applying an ointment or cream containing capsaicin is
thought to help reduce soreness, pain after surgery, migraines, psoriasis, thrush due to
chemotherapy or radiation, joint problems such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis,
nervous system problems such as diabetic neuropathy, sudden and sharp pain in one side of
the face, and nerve pain in the area of the body infected with chickenpox virus. In addition,
capsaicin is also thought to reduce back pain, muscle and soft tissue painin fibromyalgia,
relieve symptoms of prurigo nodularis skin disease, and relieve symptoms of runny noses that
are not associated with allergies or infections. Capsaicin works by first stimulating and then
reducing the intensity of pain in the body. That is why when applying a cream containing
capsaicin, we will feel the pain, but the pain will usually subside after the first use.

The other benefit of chilies is that they are believed to be able to strengthen lung
tissues and help prevent or treat chronic lung diseases where the small air sacs in the lungs
are damaged by smoking. In addition, chilies can also thin the mucus in the lungs so that it
can be easily removed from the lungs.
According to research in China, a long term consumption or capsaicin is thought to
reduce blood pressure levels, In addition, other studies also reveal that capsaicin is thought to
reduce cholesterol and prevent blood clots causing heart disease.

57. I ask every student 1 interview for admission to my institution, Pitzer College, the same
question, "What do you look forward to the most in college?". 11 was stunned and delighted
recently when a student sat across from meat a Starbucks In New York City and replied, "I
look forward to the possibility of failure". Of course, this is not how most student respond to
the question when sitting before the person who makes decisions about their academic
futures. However, this young man took a risk. They do silly things, mess up, fall down, and
lack confidence.
"My parents have never let me fail," he said. "When I want to take a chance at something,
they remind me it's not a safe route to take. Taking a more rigorous course or trying an
activity I may not succeed in, they tell me, will ruin my chances at college admission.
I wish I could tell you this is an uncommon story, but kids all over the world admit they are
under tremendous pressure to be perfect. When I was traveling in China last fall and asked a
student what she did for fun, he replied: "I thought I wasn't supposed to tell you that? I
wouldn't want you to think I am not serious about my work!"
Student are usually in hock when I chuckle and tell them I never expect perfection. In fact, I
prefer they not project it in their college applications. Of course, this goes against everything
they've been told and makes young people uncomfortable. "How could a dean of admission at
one of America's most selective institutions not want the best and the brightest? The reality is,
perfection does not exist, and we do not expect to see it in a college application. *In fact,
admission officers tend to be skeptical of students who present themselves as Individuals
without flaws.
These days, finding imperfections in a college application is like looking for a needle in a
haystack. Students try their best to hide factor they perceive to be negative and only tell us
things they believe we Will find impressive*

Which of the following is the best summary of the passage?
A. Vaping is being aggressively advertised as an effective means to help smokers stop this
habit. As a result, both smokers and non-smoker are turning to e-cigarettes. This might reduce
the number of deaths caused by smoking.

B. Severe lung diseases caused by vaping have caused a lot of concern among health
authorities in the UK. This is mainly caused by the successful marketing strategies of e
cigarettes who are targeting the most vulnerable sector, the youth.
C. A heated argument is going on about the benefits and safety of vaping. The parties against
vaping say that there is no scientific evidence that it is safe. However, opposing parties claim
that vaping is 95 percent safer than smoking which causes the deaths of hundreds of people
daily.
D. It is argued that vaping is much safer than smoking and can be used as a method to stop
smoking. Nevertheless, arguments are being raised about its safety. There is evidence that It
can cause severe reactions, particularly in teenagers. Therefore, people who are non-smokers
are advised to avoid vaping.
E. Although vaping has already caused some deaths among young people, nothing has been
done to prohibit the marketing of e-cigarettes. This is because health authorities believe that it
is still better to vape than to smoke regular tobacco cigarettes. The latter takes the live of
approximately 200 people a day.

merokok yang menyebabkan kematian ratusan orang setiap hari. (bukan tidak ada bukti,
namun kurang bukti.

The song alive as night draws in. Beneath the blanket, between the fold of cradling
arms, in rooms across the world, a hidden chorus of caregivers fills the night with song to an
audience of children. They're singing lullabies. Across cultures, lullabies echo the histories of
those who sing them.
There is a growing body of research about how lullabies help soothe both caregiver
and child. Laura Cirelli, professor of developmental psychology at the University of Toronto,
studies the science of maternal song. She found that when mothers sang lullabies, stress
levels dropped not just for the baby but for mothers as well. In her most recent work, she
found that familiar songs soothed babies the most--more than speaking or hearing unfamiliar
songs. However, lullabies tend to have collections of features across cultures. The Harvard
University's Music Lab project found that people can hear universal traits in music-even
when they are listening to songs from other cultures. The project asked 29,000 participants to
listen to 118 songs and identify whether it was a healing song, a dance song, a love song, or a
lullaby, with the findings statistically showing that people are most consisten in identifying
lullabies.
