INTRODUCTION
Firstly thank you for discovering my work and for taking an interest in my ideas and
thinking.
Welcome to GLIMMER, this has been something I have picked up and put back down due
to other projects etc etc and has been left on the back burner for to long. When I first
created this effect I performed it constantly as the reactions that came from the revelation
just stunned laymen and magicians. I scraped through many crazy methods in the darkest
parts of my mind to create something that was quick, simple, highly visual yet super clean.
The interesting thing about glimmer is that the revelation happens mid effect, leaving the
spectators brain to wonder and TRY and back track what just happened, the end of this
effect is so clean that what they have just seen seems completely impossible.
In this eBook I have included a couple of variations to suit both mentalists and magicians
as I thought both styles could benefit from an effect like this.
Id like to say a special thanks to Mike Danata for the inspiration to this effect, it was
something he mentioned to me that sparked a little bit of madness in my mind to create
this.
Welcome to
GLIMMER
GLIMMER
EFFECT
Performer shows the back of a prediction card in his/her top pocket.
A card is selected and lost in the deck
The deck is placed away
Performer now shows his prediction card
Which is incorrect?
Performer now asks the spectator to concentrate on their card.
As the performer waves his hand over the corner of the incorrect card the spectator
suddenly gets a GLIMMER of their selection!
Only to be handed the incorrect card to examine as if nothing happened
Fully examinable
Ends Clean
Resets in seconds
SETUP
The setup for this is simple; you will need 2 cards, a bit of tack/magicians wax.
A craft knife or pair of scissors.
You will need to cut 1 of the cards as per (fig 1)
Now add the tack to the back of the cut corner and place this over the bottom corner of the
complete card as per (fig 2)
The cut corner will be your force card for this effect.
Place a duplicate of the cut corner on top of your deck, place the gaff card in your top
pocket and you are set to go.
METHOD
After introducing yourself, ask the spectator if they believe in being able to glimpse into the
future?
Offer to show them a demonstration of this, show the back of the card you have in your
top pocket stating that this is your prediction card for an event that is about to happen in a
couple of moments time.
Hand the spectator a deck of cards asking them to shuffle them thoroughly.
Once done take the cards back and spread face up to show the spectator that they are
well mixed and ask that they are happy.
(This is important that you ask this as you don’t want them to think something dodgy is
going on, after all you are a magician)
As you spread the deck to show they are mixed, you are going to locate your force card,
and upon closing the spread you are going to cull this to the top of the deck.
(This can be found in the royal road to card magic and most magic books on the market.)
You will now need to force the top card using your favorite method; I tend to use the riffle
force or dribble force, but use which ever you are most comfortable with.
As soon as they get a glimpse of the card, hand the deck to the spectator and ask them to
shuffle the deck, place them back into the case and pocket the deck so there is no way
you the performer could possibly know their selection.
You will now make reference to your prediction card that you showed the back of right
from the start?
Take this from your pocket covering the corner with your finger tips; turn the card around
to show the card to the spectator.
(Be prepared for the groan as they will be expecting it to be the selection)
Have a confused look on your face and ask if it is correct?
As they state that it is incorrect ask them to concentrate on the image of their card?
Now comes the revelation!!
Slowly wave your hand over the corner, speed the wave up and spread your fingers!!
(Do this just for a brief moment!!)
This will enable the spectator to get a glimmer of their selection.
(This stuns laymen)
As soon as you see the look on their face, close up your fingers and rub the corner of the
card, pulling the gaff corner into finger palm position.
I now casually straighten the card and hand it straight out to be examined.
As they are doing this I just pocket the corner.
So their you have glimmer in its basic form.
The corner can be used over and over again
Fully examinable
Ends clean
Visually mind banging

VARIATIONS
MENTAL CORNER
Here is a variation that I feel may suit mentalists, it is as per the routine above, but you
start with the prediction inside an envelope that is left in full view on the table.
The only difference with this version is that the force card is the complete card.
The spectator selects a card and it is lost as above.
The mentalist opens the envelope and pulls the corner of the gaff card out of the envelope
showing the incorrect corner?
Now as you reach in to pull the whole card out it has changes into the selection!
Use the same ditch as above for the gaff corner.
MIND BLANK
This was a contribution by Mark Elsdon, Perform the original routine as above but replace
the prediction card for a blank card.
This again is visually stunning as the spectator will see their selection for a brief moment
appear, then vanish.
Once again the blank card can be handed straight out to be examined
Ends clean
Resets in seconds.
GAMBLER
I call this GAMBLER as it’s a version of the original glimmer effect except this is all done
from the deck, no pockets and mental predictions etc etc.
This is the routine I would normally use in bars and nightclubs.
The effect is the same except the gaff card is in with the deck.
Start by having the gaff card on the top of the deck, box this and you are set to go.
Bring out the deck and pull the cards into your hands, you are now going to pass the deck
to the spectator to shuffle, but in doing that you are going to GAMBLERS COP the gaff
card.
See images below
As soon as the spectator has finished shuffling the deck add the gaff back to the deck.
Shuffle the gaff to the top of the deck and spread casually to show the deck completely
mixed at the same time culling the force card to the top of the deck. The gaff is hidden as
it is the top card.
The only difference with the handling from this point is that the spectator does not get to
shuffle the deck after they have selected and remembered a card (force card)
As soon as the spectator selects a card (force card) you the performer casually now
shuffle the deck, bringing the gaff card to the top, claiming that you will try and get their
card to jump to the top?
The routine is exactly as above now; from here you just take the gaff card from the top of
the deck covering the corner with your finger tips.
Hold it up and perform the GLIMMER.
FINAL THOUGHTS
As I mentioned earlier this has been an ongoing battle of something I created and
changed so many times.
I’ve finally settled on a method that works ends clean and has no knuckle busting moves
as with all my releases. Its quite a bold effect as well as the gaff is right in their face and is
disposed of right under their nose which is why this effect appealed to me in so many
ways.
I hope that you get some good mileage out of this and enjoy performing it as much as I
have and done.
Feel free to change this to fit your own style.

I owe special thanks to Mike DANATA for giving me the original idea behind this effect

And to my Fiancé and kids for putting up with my Card flinging tantrums.
For without these people my art would not exist.
I do not claim to have discovered/created this effect, it has only been through my own
thoughts and ideas that I have stumbled upon this.
