is an integrated, multi-layered landscape that includes both cultural and natural heritage

the ongoing human activities within the area. This includes strict regulations on tourism and

Making the leap from school to university
Getting into university is an important event for young people. While most students
are excited about it, they should also be aware (9)__ the difference between university and
school. At school, most of your learning is done in the classroom. Teachers give you regular
assignments and provide support and resources to help you complete them. Meanwhile,
most of your learning at university involves (10)______ and project work that you need to plan
and complete by a certain date. It is your responsibility to review lecture notes, read
textbooks, and do research to find information in the library or online.
Your relationships at school are often limited to schoolmates or classmates. You
interact with them mostly in a school environment; therefore, your group of friends is small
and very familiar. By contrast, at university, you not only have more contacts, but you also
meet people from different backgrounds. Therefore, you need better (11)______ skills to deal
with any conflict you may come into when interacting with other people.
As a secondary school student, you also live with your parents (12)______ provide you with
the daily care and support you need. You don't have to worry about things such as shopping
or cooking for yourself. You have your parents take care of your physical and mental well-
being. Once you go to university, you will probably move away from home and start to live
independently. You need to improve your life skills so that you can manage your own life.

One way of training for your future occupation in Germany is by pursuing a dual
vocational training programme. Such programmes offer plenty of opportunity for on-the-job
training and work experience. Programmes usually last between two and three and a half
years and comprise theoretical as well as practical elements. You will spend one or two days
a week, or several weeks at once, at a vocational school where you will acquire the
theoretical knowledge that you will need in your future occupation. The rest of the time will
be spent at a company. There you get to apply your newly acquired knowledge in practice,
for example by learning to operate machinery. You will get to know what your company does,
learn how it operates and find out if you can see yourself working there after completing your
training.
This combination of theory and practice gives you a real head start into your job: by
the time you have completed your training, you will not only have the required technical
knowledge, but you will also have hands-on experience in your job. There are around 350
officially recognised training programmes in Germany, so chances are good that one of them
will suit your interests and talents. You can find out which one that might be by visiting one
of the jobs and vocational training fairs which are organised in many German cities at
different times in the year.
Employment prospects for students who have completed a dual vocational training
programme are very good. This is one of the reasons why this kind of training is very popular
with young Germans: around two thirds of all students leaving school go on to start a
vocational training programme.

Parents and their teens don’t always agree on issues such as dress, following family rules,
or how teens spend their time. As a result, arguments often occur. In fact, researchers tell us
that most families experience an increase in conflicts and arguments as their children enter
their teenage years.
As children grow, their behavior and attitudes are influenced by a variety of people with
whom they have contact. They need to explore their world more independently so they can
learn to feel confident in themselves and their abilities. During adolescence, teens begin to
assert themselves with their parents and other people. Often, teens demand more
responsibility and freedom for personal choices. They may begin to try new ways to dress or
spend more time with friends and less time with family.
Adolescents try to find out who they are and where they fit in. They want to make choices
on their own, but at the same time, they are not always ready to handle the responsibilities
that go along with those choices. Conflicts arise most sharply when teens are 13-15 years
old, but generally decline as children get older. As might be expected, younger teens need
more help in making decisions than older teens because they are less capable of
understanding how their behaviors can affect themselves and others. As teens get older,
they are better able to consider and understand the possible consequences of their
behaviors and so are better able to make important decisions.
For adolescents, the struggle for autonomy (being able to think and act independently)
can be quite stressful. Although teens may behave in ways to assert their autonomy from the
family, they still depend on parents for emotional support and guidance. By including teens
in appropriate decision-making, parents can help their children learn how to make good
decisions and become independent adults.

Bullying leads to a decrease in academic performance. A study by CDC researchers
showed that 12.9% of teenagers who missed school due to safety concerns feared bullying.
Victims of bullying may also avoid participating in class for fear of drawing attention to
themselves and getting bullied. They may then become labelled as low achievers, putting
them at an even higher risk of being targeted by bullies.
Like all forms of bullying, physical bullying can cause emotional change. It makes the
victims feel unconfident and think less of themselves. This leads to feelings of shame,
isolation, and despair. Moreover, the child may lose interest in playing or activities they
previously enjoyed and engage in harmful behaviour, such as self-harm. These actions lead
to more negative feelings and thoughts, creating a self-destructive cycle. In victims with
existing depression and anxiety, bullying can make these conditions worse. Besides the
physical injuries, victims may get from the attacks, they may also develop health issues,
such as somatization. Somatization includes physical symptoms caused by psychological or
emotional factors. For instance, the child may complain about headaches, body pain, or
tiredness.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet
to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions .
In the past hundred years, biodiversity around the world has decreased dramatically.
Many species have gone extinct. Extinction is a natural process; some species naturally die
out while new species evolve. But human activity has changed the natural processes of
extinction and evolution. Scientists estimate that they are dying out at hundreds of times
the natural rate.
A major reason for the loss of biodiversity is that natural habitats are being destroyed.
The fields, forests, and wetlands where wild plants and animals live are disappearing. Land is
cleared to plant crops or build houses and factories. Forests are cut for lumber and firewood.
Between 1990 and 2005, the amount of forested land in Honduras, for instance, dropped 37
percent.
As habitats shrink, fewer individuals can live there. The creatures that survive have
fewer breeding partners, so genetic diversity declines.
Pollution, overfishing, and overhunting have also caused a drop in biodiversity. Global
climate change - the latest rise in the average temperature around the globe, linked to
human activity - is also a factor. Warmer ocean temperatures damage fragile ecosystems
such as coral reefs. A single coral reef can shelter 3,000 species offish and other sea
creatures such as clams and sea stars.
