parasite. Loranthus seeds
are disseminated by birds
on to the stems of the
host.
• Loranthus seeds do not
require a host for
germination stimulus and
will germinate
spontaneously.

• The first attachment structure
formed is called a holdfast. The
haustorium from the holdfast
eventually connects to the host
xylem.
• Parasite removes water and
mineral nutrients from the host.
• When in contact with the host
cambium, the Loranthus
haustorium induces the formation
of additional wood that enlarges
into fluted columns.

• Pruning of affected branches Periodic removal of mistletoes

• Ethephon effectively controls mistletoes in some situations.
