EEM603 Course outcomes

CO1 Explain various power generation schemes and describe concepts of ac distribution
systems
CO2 Determine the value of transmission line parameters and describe transmission line
model
CO3 Describe construction and working of ohl insulators, determine sag
CO4 Describe structure of various underground cables and calculate their capacitance

CO5 Explain the concepts of power system stability

UNIT 1: LOAD CHARACTERISTICS


Structure of electric power system, Load curves, Typical demand and diversity factor,
Important points in the selection of generating units, Tariffs
OVERHEAD TRANSMISSION LINE PARAMETERS
Types of conductors. Calculation of inductance and capacitance of single phase, double
circuit transmission lines, three phase lines with stranded and bundled conductors, skin
and proximity effects.
UNIT 2PERFORMANCE OF TRANSMISSION LINES
Representation of lines, Generalized ABCD constants, Equivalent circuits of short, medium
and long lines. Ferranti Effect, Regulation and efficiency of short, medium and long lines.
Series and shunt compensation. Introduction to FACTS.
DC& AC transmission systems, Comparison of copper efficiency.
UNIT 3: OVERHEAD LINE INSULATORS AND UNDERGROUND CABLES
Line Insulators: Types, material, String efficiency, voltage distribution over a string of
suspension insulators, Methods of improving string efficiency, testing of insulators. Cables:
Construction, Calculation of capacity of cables, charging current, insulation resistance and
capacitance of cables, Dielectric power loss, Electrostatic stress, power factor and heating
of cables, Methods of safe operation of cable: Grading of cables, corona power loss.
UNIT 4: LOAD FLOW ANALYSIS:
Bus admittance matrix formulation, Bus classification, basic load flow equation, numerical
load flow solutions for simple power systems (max 3 buses) using Gauss Seidel method,
Newton Raphson method, and Fast decoupled load flow method, Comparison of load flow
methods.
UNTI 5: Power SYSTEM SYNCHRONOUS STABILITY Stability limits, power angle diagram,
M and H constants, Swing equation, methods to improve steady-state stability, Numerical
solution of Swing equation (point-by point solution), Equal Area criterion, critical clearing
angle and critical clearing time.
