Speech by President Droupadi Murmu

Johar! Namaskar!

I humbly greet all my fellow citizens from this sacred Parliament -

a symbol of the hopes, aspirations and rights of all the citizens of India.

Your affection, trust, and support will be my greatest strength

in discharging my duties and responsibilities.

I started my life journey from a small tribal village in Odisha.

From the background I come from, it was like a dream for me to even get an elementary education.

Despite many obstacles, my resolve remained firm - and I became the first daughter of my village to

go to college.

I come from a tribal society - and today, I have reached the highest constitutional post in the nation.

This is the greatness of India - the mother of democracy.

My election is proof that the poor in India can not only dream, but also fulfill those dreams.

Reaching this office is not my personal achievement -

it is the achievement of every poor person in India, every tribal, every marginalized citizen.

It gives me great satisfaction that people who have been deprived of development for years -

the poor, the oppressed, Dalits, backward communities, tribals -

can now see their reflection in me. My nomination carries the blessings of crores of women and the

marginalized.

In my life, I have had many roles - teacher, state minister, Governor -

but public service has always defined me.

I strongly believe: working for the welfare of the world

is far greater than one's own interests.

As Bhim Bhoi, an Odia poet said:

"Mo jeeban pachhe narke padi thau, jagato uddhar heu."

I was born into a tribal tradition that lives in harmony with nature.

Today, when the world faces ecological challenges, these values are more important than ever.

India is guiding the world in environmental protection, and this awareness comes from roots like

mine.

I have observed the enthusiasm and confidence of our youth.

Once, Atal Bihari Vajpayee said:

"When the youth of the country progress, they not only create their own destiny but also shape the

fate of the country."

That vision is now coming true - in areas from Vocal for Local to Digital India to emerging

technologies.

Women are playing an unparalleled role in nation-building today.

The policies of recent years have infused new energy into India's progress by empowering our

sisters and daughters.

I encourage them to contribute even more - because your voices, your efforts, are essential.

Growth and progress mean marching forward - but it also requires awareness of our past.

Respecting our traditions, serving society, and working together in unity:

this is the India I believe in, and the one I will serve with devotion.
