Basic Lab Tools

The document outlines a chemistry lab activity for 9th-grade students focused on understanding chemical bonds, formulas, and reactions through measurement and estimation using lab tools. Students will use digital scales and tweezers to measure the mass of small objects, compare their estimates with actual measurements, and reflect on their findings. The procedure includes step-by-step instructions for using a digital scale and questions to encourage critical thinking about the lab experience.

LAB GUIDE: BASIC LAB TOOLS

Lab tools like digital scales allow scientists to make accurate measurements without
relying on estimation, a process essential to scientific investigation. A scale
measures an object's mass by detecting the gravitational force acting on it, providing
precise numerical data. In everyday life, people might guess the weight of an object,
but scientific tools remove that uncertainty.

In this activity, you will use common lab tools such as digital scales and tweezers to
estimate and measure the mass of small, classroom-safe objects. You will work in
small groups to compare your predictions with actual measurements and learn how
each tool helps you make accurate observations. This lab also helps improve your
precision and fine motor skills.

MATERIALS:
● Digital scale or balance
● Tweezers
● Paperclips
● Cotton balls
● Marbles
● Notebook
PROCEDURE
1. As a group, gather the materials listed above.
2. Observe the objects on the table and estimate the mass of each one.
3. Record your predictions in your notebook.
4. Use the digital scale to weigh each object and write down the actual mass.
5. Use tweezers to move small or delicate objects if necessary.
6. Compare your estimates with the actual measurements and reflect on any
differences.

How to Use a Digital Scale (Step-by-Step)

1. Turn it on: Press the power button and wait for the screen to display "0.00"
or similar.
2. Check the unit of measurement: Most scales use grams (g). If needed,
press the unit button to switch to grams.

3. Tare the scale (zero it out): If you're using a container (like a small cup or
tray), place it on the scale first, then press the “Tare” or “Zero” button to
reset the scale to 0. This tells the scale to ignore the weight of the container
so only the object’s mass is measured.

4. Place the object on the scale: Gently put the object (e.g., a paperclip, cotton
ball, marble) on the center of the scale. Wait for the number to stabilize—this
is your measured mass in grams.

5. Record the measurement: Write down the number and compare it with their
predictions.

Tips for Best Use:

● Use the scale on a flat, stable surface.

● Don’t touch or lean on the scale while weighing—it affects accuracy.
● Handle objects with tweezers for small or delicate items.

QUESTIONS

1. Which object had the biggest difference between your estimate and the real
mass? Why do you think that happened?
2. How did using tweezers help you during the lab?
3. Which lab tool did you find most useful? Explain why.
4. What would happen if you used your hands instead of tools to weigh or move
objects?
