1. Executive Summary :
The University of Mumbai aims to revamp its existing Language
Laboratory to meet the evolving needs of modern language learning. The
current setup, though functional, lacks digital tools, updated software, and
infrastructure necessary for interactive and immersive language education.
This proposal outlines a plan for upgrading the language lab into a digitally
equipped, student-centered, and technologically advanced facility. The
modernization will benefit both faculty and students by enhancing teaching
methodologies and learning outcomes.
2. Statement of the Problem :
The existing Language Laboratory at the University of Mumbai was
established over a decade ago and has not seen major upgrades since then. The
equipment and software currently in use are outdated, lacking in multimedia
capabilities and online integration. The absence of interactive tools and
modern assessment software has limited the scope of language instruction and
student engagement. As a result, students are unable to practice in real-time,
receive immediate feedback, or access personalized learning content.
3. Objectives :
- To upgrade the infrastructure with state-of-the-art hardware and software.
- To provide access to interactive, multimedia-based language learning tools.
- To enable self-paced and blended learning environments.
- To improve pronunciation, listening, and speaking skills through advanced
tools.
- To facilitate teacher-led digital assessments and progress tracking.
4. Technical Plan :

- Installation of 25 new language lab computers with noise-cancelling
headsets.
- Smart-board and projector setup for instructor-led sessions.
- Licensed language lab software (e.g., Sanako, Robotel, or similar).
- High-speed internet and LAN connectivity.
- Integration of speech recognition and AI-powered evaluation tools.
- Air conditioning, ergonomic seating, and soundproofing for a
comfortable learning environment.
Timeline:
- Phase 1 (Month 1): Procurement and infrastructure preparation
- Phase 2 (Month 2): Installation and setup
- Phase 3 (Month 3): Testing, training of staff, and soft launch
5. Management Plan :
