I live in North Essex with my husband, three

children, dog and rescue hens. I learnt to crochet
when I was little but only picked it up properly when
I was expecting my first baby. I purchased lots of
scrappy balls of yarn, lovingly made a series of
wonky blankets and was totally hooked!

Crochet is now my go-to craft for when I manage to

find myself a bit of me-time at the end of the day. I
like trying out new twists on old classics and making
designs my own. For me, one of the best things
about crochet is how versatile even the most basic of
stitches is. You don’t need to know complicated
stitches and techniques to make something
beautiful!

My square is formed with stripes of lemon peel

stitch which simply alternates between double
crochet and treble crochet.
I love the way that mixing up these two basic
stitches adds such a lovely texture to a piece.
It also provides a really workable canvas for surface
crochet because the stitches aren’t too uniform.
I have added the word ‘love’ but this could be
omitted or a different word or initials could be
added instead – its fun to personalise a design!

Knitcraft Cotton Blend in the following shades:

Yarn A: Light Blue

Yarn B: Denim
Yarn C: Lilac
Yarn D: Coral

You will need a 5mm hook and a tapestry needle for sewing in your ends.

Notes:

Your turning chain (the chains at the start of each row) will always count towards
your stitch count for each row, so each row will be 29 stitches (28 stitches plus
your turning chain of 2 or 3 chains depending on whether your turning chain is
equivalent to a tr or a dc).

After the foundation row, each row is worked by alternating between tr and dc
stitches. If you end a row with a dc, you will start the next row with ch 3 (counts
as a tr) and should end with a tr. If you end a row with a tr, you will start the next
row with Ch 2 (counts as a dc) and should end with a dc. The pattern is quite
forgiving and its not the end of the world if you end up with a couple of tr or dc
together. Its about keeping the overall randomness of the pattern.

Your finished square should measure 20cm square including the dc edge. To
achieve this you will need to work to a tension of approximately 15 stitches and 10
rows of the pattern to fit a 10 cm square.

Please note: UK terms are used throughout

CH – Chain
TR – Treble Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
Pattern:

Foundation Row:

Using Yarn A Chain 30, 1 tr into 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc into next chain. Continue to end
alternating between tr and dc. You should finish on a dc. (29 stitches including turning
chain).

R1: Ch 3, 1 dc in next stitch, 1 tr in next. Continue to end alternating between tr and dc,
you should finish on a tr.

R2: Ch 2, 1 tr in next stitch, 1 dc in next. Continue to end alternating between tr and dc,
you should finish on a dc.

Fasten off.

R4: Repeat R2

R5: Repeat R1. Fasten off

R6: Join Yarn C, repeat R2

R15: Join Yarn C, repeat R1

R16: Repeat R2

R17: Repeat R1. Fasten Off.

Note: As tension varies from person to person, you may need to add extra length to your
square. To do this simply add further stripes in groups of 3 rows per colour until you
achieve the correct length. (Don’t forget that your edging row will also add around 5mm
to the top and bottom of your square).
To edge: Join Yarn D to any corner, work 1dc in each stitch around the edge making 2
chains in each corner.
To work your surface crochet:

To work the heart you can either cut a template from paper or draw the outline using a
water erasable marker. I have worked the lettering in freehand but again, you could mark
it out using a water erasable marker. You could opt to add your own lettering or omit the
lettering altogether and just work the heart outline.

To add the surface crochet, make a loop in your yarn. Use your hook to pull the loop
through from the back of the piece. You will work the surface stitches by inserting the
hook back through the yarn in the next space and pulling the yarn up through the loop on
your hook. You are effectively working slip stitch across the surface of your work. To
finish, fasten off and sew the end back through the stitches on the reverse side of the
square. Sew in your ends from the start in the same way

You've now completed

your granny square!

Don't forget to head back to the

blog where a new square will be

released at 10 am, Monday to

Saturday.
