Solution Part II
Social Science Class VII Geography (October Month) Day: 3
Chapter 6 : Natural vegetation and wildlife

Q1. Answer the following questions very briefly:

A. Which are the three categories of natural vegetation?
Ans: The natural vegetation is generally classified into three broad categories:
a. Forests: Which grow where temperature and rainfall are plentiful to support a tree
cover. Depending upon these factors, dense and open forests are grown.
b. Grasslands: These grow in the region of moderate rain.
c. Shrubs: Thorny shrubs and scrubs grow in dry region.
B. Name the typical trees of tropical rainforests.
Ans. The typical trees of tropical rainforests are rosewood, ebony and mahogany.
They are hard wood trees.

C. In which part of the world are Monsoon Forests found?

Ans: Tropical deciduous or Monsoon Forests are found in the large part of India,
Northern Australia and Central America.

D. In which part of the world is Mediterranean vegetation found?

Ans: Mediterranean vegetation is found in the areas around the Mediterranean Sea in
Europe, Africa and Asia. This kind of vegetation is also found outside the actual
Mediterranean region in California in the USA, South West Africa, South America and
South West Australia.

E. State two types of grasslands. Name the typical animals of each type.
Ans: The two types of grasslands are Tropical Grassland and Temperate Grasslands.
In Tropical grasslands, animals like elephants, zebras, giraffes, deer, and leopard are
found.
In Temperate grasslands, animals like buffaloes, bison and antelope are commonly
found.

F. What types of forests are found in mid-latitudinal coastal region? Name the typical
trees of the forests.

1
Ans: Temperate evergreen forests are found in the mid latitudinal coastal region. They
are commonly found along the eastern margin of the continents, e.g. in South East
USA, South China and South East Brazil. They comprise both hard and soft wood trees
like oak, pine, eucalyptus etc.

Q2. Answer the following questions briefly:

A. Mention the uses of coniferous forests.
Ans: Coniferous forests comprise of tall softwood evergreen trees. The wood of these
trees are very useful.
a. It is used for making pulp; this is used in manufacturing paper and news prints.
b. It is used for making match boxes and packing boxes.
B. Distinguish between Tundra and Taiga types of vegetation.
Ans: Taiga vegetation: Taiga vegetation or coniferous vegetation is found in the higher
latitudes (500 to 700) of the Northern hemisphere. They are tall, softwood evergreen
trees. The wood of these trees is very useful. Chir, pine cedar is important trees of this
type of vegetation.
Tundra vegetation: Tundra vegetation is found in polar region. The growth of
vegetation is very limited here. It grows during the very short summer. This vegetation
is found in the polar areas of Europe, Asia and North America.

C. What type of vegetation is found in deserts and why?

Ans: Thorny bushes are found in dry desert like regions. The sand in the desert region
gets so hot that no vegetation can be grown here. Moreover water does not retain in
sand for a long time. So vegetation cover is scarce in deserts.

D. Distinguish between Mediterranean vegetation and Coniferous forests.

Ans: Mediterranean trees: Mediterranean vegetation is found in the areas around the
Mediterranean Sea in Europe, Africa and Asia. It is mostly found in the west and south
west margins of the continents. This kind of vegetation is also found outside the
actual Mediterranean region in California in the USA, South West Africa, South
America and South West Australia.
Coniferous Forests: Coniferous vegetation or Taiga vegetation is found in the higher
latitudes (500 to 700) of the Northern hemisphere. They are tall, softwood evergreen
trees. The wood of these trees is very useful. Chir, pine cedar is important trees of this
type of vegetation.

E. Distinguish between Tropical Evergreen forests and Tropical Deciduous forests.

Ans: Tropical Evergreen forests: Tropical Evergreen forests are also called rainforests.
These thick forests occur in region near the equator and close to the tropics. These
regions are hot and receive heavy rainfall throughout the year. As there is no particular
dry season, trees do not shed their leaves altogether. This is the reason they are called
evergreen forests. Hardwoods like ebony, mahogany and rosewood are common trees
found here.
Tropical Deciduous Forests: Tropical deciduous forests are also called monsoon

forests. They are found in the large part of India, Northern Australia and in Central
America. These regions experience seasonal changes. Trees shed their leaves in the
dry season to conserve water. The hardwood trees found in this region are sal, teak,
neem and sheesham.

Q2. Answer the following questions in detail:

1. Distinguish between Tropical Deciduous and Temperate Deciduous Forests.
Ans: Tropical Deciduous Forests: Tropical deciduous forests are also called monsoon
forests. They are found in the large part of India, Northern Australia and in Central
America. These regions experience seasonal changes. Trees shed their leaves in the
dry season to conserve water. The hardwood trees found in this region are sal, teak,
neem and sheesham.
Temperate Deciduous forests: Temperate Deciduous forests are found in the higher
latitudes. These are found in the north eastern part of the USA, China, New Zealand,
and Chile and in the coastal regions of Western Europe. They shed their leaves in the
dry season. Common trees of these forests are oak, ash, beech etc.

2. “Animals inhabiting polar region have thick fur and skin.” Give reason.
Ans: The Polar Regions are always covered with snow. The sun rays are very slanting
here. Therefore these places are extremely cold. Animals of these regions have thick
fur and thick skin to protect themselves from the cold climatic conditions.

3. “Temperate grasslands are found in the interior part of the continents.” Can you tell
why these grasslands are known as “Granaries of the world”?
Ans: Temperate Grasslands are found in the mid latitudinal zones and in the interior
part of the continents. Usually, grass here is short and nutritious. These regions are
called the “Granaries of the world” because in these regions wheat is cultivated and
produced on a large scale with the help of mechanized tools and modern machinery.
In these regions large quantity of wheat is also exported.
