PAKISTANI CULTURE
MEANING:
“Identity to society”
DEFINITION:
It is the characteristic and knowledge of a particular group of
people. DERIVED:
Derived from a Latin word ‘Cloere’ which means To build on.
Culture include food, religion, language, social behavior, music, arts, marriages, what to
wear, how we wear it, what we believe is right or wrong and million other things.
Where there is society there must be culture.
⮚ According to Taylor;
“Culture is a complex whole which include language, knowledge, beliefs, arts, and
habits required by man as a member of society”
⮚ According to Lowie's;
“Culture is a whole of social tradition”
Why he use the word ‘Whole’ ?

∙ In Punjabi culture the most spoken language is Punjabi, but also potohari, Hindko, Pahari

and Majhi is famous.

∙ Sports ( kabaddi, Gilli danda)
∙ Music (tabla, sitar, bansuri and dhol)
∙ Literature ( Bulleh Shah, Waris Shah)

CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE
o Culture is learnt:
Culture is not inherited. Culture is adopted from environment. Culture is learnt by
language. Parents make their children learn their Culture by language, practice.
o Culture is shared:
If one person is practicing something that is called as habit. If group of people are
practicing something or sharing ideas that is called as culture. Individual person
cannot make culture. Culture is shared means a lots of people are following same
thing.
For example:
It is culture of Pakistan to wear shalwar and kameez.

∙ It is not static.
o Culture is dynamic and adaptive:
∙ It is slow process but changes time to time.
∙ It is flexible.
For example:
If we see 1980s time there was no cell phones to communicate other person people
write and sent letters to each other but now we just text and deliver our message to
other one. o Culture is consistent and integrated:
Culture supports it’s all values. It is interconnected to morals, traditions, values and
religion etc. For example:
Social sciences has a lots of branches which are interconnected to it’s all
branches.
CULTURE IS UNIVERSAL
Cultural universals are patterns or traits that are globally common to
all societies. Examples include the family unit, language and the
concept of personal names.
CULTURE IS ABSTRACT
Culture is the shared ways of doing and thinking. There are degrees
of visibility of cultural behaviour, ranging from the regularised
activities of persons to their internal reasons for so doing. In
other words, we cannot see culture as such we can only see
human behaviour
DEPENDS ON SYMBOLS
Culture is based on a shared set of symbols and meanings.
Symbolic culture enables human communication and must be
taught. ... According to sociologists, symbols make up one of the
5 key elements of culture; the other key elements are language,
values, beliefs, and norms.
CONCLUSION
To conclude culture is everything which is socially learned and
shared by the members of a society. It is culture that in the wide
focus of the world,distingusihes individual from individual , group
from group and society..
∙ The culture that we observed in the society.
Real Culture:
∙ The culture that were followed by our society.
∙ The culture that exist or present in the society.
For example:
⮚ Poverty that exist in Pakistan is the real culture of Pakistan.
⮚ Corruption that exists in Pakistan is the real culture of Pakistan.
∙ The culture that is presented as a model to the people.
Ideal Culture:
∙ It is the culture that a society desires to follow but some of its parts remained
unpracticed. The part of ideal culture that a society achieved or follow is called real
culture. For example:
⮚ We want to remove poverty or corruption from our country so it is our ideal culture. ⮚
Islam is our real culture because we are not following all the rules and regulations of
Islam.
∙ It refers to the physical things that make our culture.
Material Culture:
∙ It includes tangible things that are created by Man and human
beings. For example:
⮚ Clothes i.e. dress shalwar and kameez
⮚ The native dress of Pakistan which represents Pakistan culture.
⮚ India native dress is Saris which represents Indian culture
∙ Non material culture refers to the non physical things.
Non Material Culture:
∙ It includes non-tangible elements that make a culture
For example:
⮚ Language i.e. Urdu is the national language of Pakistan.
⮚ Laws of the country.
⮚ It includes the celebrations i.e in Pakistan Eid-al- Adha, Eid-Ul-Fitr, 14 August
etc. ELEMENTS OF CULTURE:

SYMBOLS:
Culture is a system of symbols. Symbols are anything used to represent express and stand
for an event situation.
⮚ It is used to show an event of past, present, future
⮚ Symbols also show our culture
NORMS:
Norms as element of culture are the rules and the guidelines which specify the behavior
of an individual.
⮚ Norms keep a person within the boundary of society
⮚ It makes the structure of society
∙ Muslim handshaking (salam) in Islam
Example:
∙ Hindus namesty in our culture
∙ In japans people bent-half
Norms can be divided into:
∙ Folkways are the simple customary ways of the people
FOLKWAY:
∙ It is the normal and habitual action of people within culture
∙ Morals are customs or beliefs accordance with a group customary
MORALS:
expectation ∙ It is the “Must” behavior of a person
VALUES:
⮚ Anything getting important in our daily life becomes our values
⮚ Which people assess desirability goodness and that serve as broad guidelines for
social living
⮚ Values depends upon the culture
⮚ It is agreements about good and bad
∙ In Muslims values are respect elders, every humans are equal
Example:
∙ In Pathans values are “mashar kashar” means “ respect elder” and “mealmastiyaa”
means “hospitality”
BELIEFS:
Every sect within a culture having some beliefs for cultural refuge:
⮚ Belief are responsible from the spiritual fulfillment of needs and
wants ⮚ Belief basically the trust or hope who believe the humans
are truth
∙ Muslim believe in God, Prophets, the Day of judgment, Quran,
Example:
Hajj etc ∙ Sikh wear bangle in one hand, keep dagger, bear a long
∙ The water of ganga are sacred for Hindus

FUNCTIONS OF CULTURE:
1: Culture is the treasure of knowledge:
⮚ Culture transfer the knowledge about cultural values, norms, beliefs and
traditions. ⮚ It is transmitted via language from generation to generation.
⮚ Animals do not have this type of knowledge.
Marcus Garvey said:
“A people without the knowledge of their past, history origin and culture is like
the trees without the roots”
Example:
People know how far apart or close they should stand while talking to others according
to their culture.
2: Culture defines situations:
⮚ It defines a situation.
⮚ It tells the conditions of the situation and determine what to do or not
to do. ⮚ It tells us how to act us how to act and
⮚ handle a particular situation
For example:
A dispute risen between two families of village they will take the situation to the elders
of the village because their culture tell them how to handle a conflicting situation.
3: Culture defines attitudes, values and goals:
⮚ Culture defines attitude that how to act in a certain way
⮚ Culture defines our values for e.g. we are Muslims so we are used to take hijab this
is our values.
⮚ Culture defines goals.
4: Culture define behavior patterns:
⮚ Culture tells us how to behave in a certain
⮚ situation. Culture directs and confines the situation.
⮚ It rewards the noble works and punishes the ignoble ones.
Example:
Person becomes a father he distributed sweets among his co-villagers that how he
celebrate his happiness according to his culture
5: Culture defines our career:
⮚ Our career is selected by our culture.
⮚ Whether we should become a politician, doctor or engineer. It is decided by our
culture. ⮚ We select career according to our culture values.
Example:
A Pathans family doesn't allow women to work with men faculty or till mid night
that's why women select a job where the men are in less number.
6. Culture molds personality:
⮚ Culture is consists of a shared values and beliefs, a manner and way of life that's
why it totally molds our personality.
⮚ Culture changes our thinking, perception and assumptions that's why our
personality changes.
Example:
A man leaves his country and starts living in abroad he will start to adapts to foreign
culture.
