GENUINE OVER ARTIFICIAL: The Gift of Human
Intelligence
Mark Louie L. Budias
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly growing in today’s world. Many things were
formerly perceived as impossible to achieve, but with the advent of artificial
intelligence, they have become more accessible to all. It indeed has the potential to
become a major, reliable instrument or platform in all aspects of life. Although AI is
explicitly advancing why human intelligence is much better, more unique, and
superior than AI. The document Antiqua Et Nova, Note on the relationship between
Artificial Intelligence and Human Intelligence, provides substantive arguments
concerning the presence of Artificial Intelligence. The product of human intelligence
creates Artificial Intelligence; it remains artificial and is less compared to human
intelligence, exposing the five marks of the mental specifically, consciousness,
subjective experience, privacy, ontological subjectivity, and intentionality, which AI
can not surpass the superiority of the human mind.
The church has remained in its teachings, she emphasized that the gift of
intelligence should be expressed through the responsible use of reason and
technical abilities as a steward in the Lord's vineyard. In other words, the
responsibility of taking care of God’s creations must be based just like we are taking
care of our own, may it be the use of the technologies that are available or
anything, so long as it does not override human dignity. This can become possible
due to the “consciousness” that God himself gave unto us. Consciousness, I believe,
is the foundation of all. The idea of consciousness is an awareness of thoughts and
feelings. We are aware of what is happening in our minds and around us. The
presence of consciousness, perhaps, could drive us towards appropriate action,
while it is important for the recognition of possessing such consciousness, as much
as applying it in real-life situations.
Subjective quality is a subjective experience in which only the subject feels
the properties and circumstances that occur from within. This would imply that
experiencing something like, for instance, experiencing a headache, only the person
who has a headache can tell the degree of the headache he or she feels, since it is
a personal experience. Artificial Intelligence in this part has less knowledge that no
matter how great the technology is, Artificial Intelligence, even if everything is
programmed already, it can't really know about everything like a human person.
Since subjective quality answers the “what-it-is-like” quality, it shows that
consciousness involves more than just physical processes; it includes the lived
experience that AI doesn't have. This is important since many would rely on the
technological services, such as guidance and counselling. The Antiqua Et Nova is
firm in it by saying that human intelligence is ultimately a God given gift, which is a
good way to relate to the Truth. “Truth attains its ultimate meaning”, and entrusting
to God is a fundamental decision that engages the whole person. It is a gift which
God himself wrapped for us all.
Privacy or private, as one of the marks of the mental states, is directly
accessible only to its owner. In every circumstance, only the owner can access the
feeling of love, the taste of the food, and others. These are all personal
involvements in what it feels like. Pope Francis has stated, : The intrinsic dignity of
every man and every woman must be the key criterion in evaluating emerging
technologies.” The human becomes the sanctuary in which is what makes the
human dignified and mysterious compared to the coded and programmed data,
which is subject to inspection by the IT experts. In addition, Ontological subjectivity
is a mental states that exist only as there is someone who has or experiences it. AI
can be part of the conscious and responsible answer to humanity's vocation to the
good. It still raises an important concern: how can we advocate for good if it is not
grounded in the very being of a person? AI’s processes exist, but not as lived
experience. The human mind’s experiences have real personal existence, AI’s do
not.
Intentionality is a mental state that is about things in the world. This is a
unique mental state since there is a process wherein intentionality occurs towards
content. For instance, I want to finish this paper. The intention is to finish the
content is the paper. Furthermore, this is not limited only to the real things since
the mind is so unlimited that it can go beyond the vast horizon of the world. This is
where the comparison of “Artificial Intelligence” and “Human Intelligence” is made.
AI is patterned or processed but has no true understanding since it has no direct
experience or feelings, while Human Intelligence is purpose-driven towards a
meaningful and worthwhile outcome. The human mind's purposeful thinking
connects it more deeply to the world in which AI cannot.
God is the truth; this is undeniable. Explicitly, what the document tries to
impose on every person is to become responsible. Human Intelligence is ultimately
God’s gift. It is given by God for us to know and assimilate truth. It would be in
contradiction if one must use Human intelligence for the inappropriate act.
Substituting God-the Truth with human creations, such as the AI, is idolatry.
Although truth transcends the boundaries of human intellect, as a desirable and
rational being, we are shackled and attracted to it. God is the perfect example of
what is TRUTH. Hence, by following his teachings and his way of living, it would be
possible to arrive at the truth because, from the very beginning, we know what the
truth is and who the truth is. There must be a clear stand against technology
applications that inherently threaten human life and dignity.
