Differentiate Ulcerative Colitis from Chron's Disease (200 words max) ···/7
Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) are both types of inflammatory bowel
disease (IBD) but differ in key characteristics. UC is confined to the colon and rectum, with
continuous inflammation that affects only the innermost mucosal layer. In contrast, CD can
affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus, with patchy, "skip
lesion" inflammation that penetrates all layers of the intestinal wall. Symptoms of UC
typically include bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, urgency, and tenesmus, whereas CD often
presents with non-bloody diarrhea, crampy abdominal pain, weight loss, and complications
such as fistulas, strictures, and abscesses. UC is more likely to lead to toxic megacolon and
an increased risk of colon cancer, while CD is associated with malabsorption, perianal
disease, and bowel obstructions. Diagnosis relies on endoscopy, biopsy, and imaging
studies, revealing superficial inflammation in UC and deep, cobblestone-like lesions in CD.
Treatment for both includes aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and
biologic therapies. While surgery can cure UC by removing the colon, CD is more challenging
to treat surgically, as it frequently recurs even after bowel resection. Proper differentiation
between UC and CD is essential for appropriate management and improved patient
outcomes.
