Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, serving from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. He was born in 1809 in Kentucky and grew up in a poor family, working various jobs. Lincoln began his political career in 1834 when he was elected to the Illinois General Assembly, and he later became a lawyer. In 1860, Lincoln was elected President as the first Republican candidate and helped abolish slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment during the Civil War. Lincoln was reelected in 1864 but was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865.

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of
the United States serving from March 1861
until his assassination in April 1865.

He was born on February 12, 1809 in


Kentucky, United States.

His family was forced out of the house & so


they had to move to Indiana in 1816.

After moving to Indiana, his mother died


when he was just 9 years old.
He was reared in a poor family on the
western frontier.
Abraham Lincolns nickname Honest
Abe came from his honesty and decency
as a young man while running his store.
As a pre-teen, he did not like the hard
labor associated with frontier life.
Some in his family, and in the
neighborhood, for a time considered him
to be lazy.
Lincoln also agreed with the customary
obligation of a son to give his father all
earnings from work done outside the
home until age 21.
Beginning of Political Career:

On August 4th, 1834, Lincoln was


elected to the Illinois General
Assembly.

In 1836 Lincoln was reelected, He


also received his license to start
practicing law.

In 1838 Lincoln becomes the Whig


party floor leader
On November 6, 1860, Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the
United States.

He was the first president from the Republican Party. In August 6th ,
1861 Lincoln signs a law freeing slaves being used by the confederate
army.

On June 19, 1862, endorsed by Lincoln, Congress passed an act banning


slavery on all federal territory.

In July 1862, the Second Confiscation Act was passed, which set up court
procedures that could free the slaves of anyone convicted of aiding the
rebellion.

President Lincoln played a major role in civil war, appointing most of the
commanders of armies himself
While the war was still being
waged, Lincoln faced
reelection in 1864 & won
again as the president of
United States.

On March 4, 1865,
Lincoln delivered his
second inaugural address

The Civil War ended in


1865.
He signed the Homestead Act in 1862, making millions of acres of
government-held land in the West available for purchase at very low
cost.

The Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act, also signed in 1862, provided


government grants for agricultural colleges in each state.

In 1861, Lincoln signed the second and third Morrill Tariff as well as
the Revenue Act, introducing the theme of Income Tax in the U.S.

Lincoln is largely responsible for the institution of the Thanksgiving


holiday in the United States.
