WELDING
INTRODUCTION
• Robot welding is a relatively new application of robotics.
• Robots were first introduced into US industry during the 1960s.
The use of robots in welding did not take off until the 1980s,
when the automotive industry began using robots extensively
for spot welding.
• Since then, both the number of robots used in industry and the
number of their applications has grown greatly
• Robot arc welding has begun growing quickly just recently, and
already it commands about 20% of industrial robot applications.
• A robotic welding system may perform more repeat ably than
a manual welder because of the monotony of the task.
ROBOT
• Robot is a electromechanical device with multiple degrees
of freedom that is programmable to accomplish a variety of
tasks.
ROBOTICS
• Robotics deals with the science and technology of robots
and their design, manufacture and application.
ROBOTIC WELDING
• The use of mechanized programmable tools (robots), which
completely automate a welding process by both
performing the weld and handling the part.
Robot welding is categorized into two types.
• Spot welding
• Arc welding
SPOT WELDING
• Spot welding is a process in which two sheet metal parts are
fused together at localized parts by passing a large electric
current through the parts where the weld is to be made.
• The electric current results in sufficient heat in the contact
area to fuse the two metal parts, hence producing the weld.
• SPOT WELDING
ARC WELDING
• During the short time that industrial welding robots have been
in use, the jointed arm or revolute type has become by far the
most popular.
• For welding it has almost entirely replaced the other types
except for the Cartesian, which is used for very large and very
small robots.
• The reason for the popularity of the jointed arm type is that it
allows the welding torch to be manipulated in almost the
same fashion as a human being would manipulate it.
• The torch angle and travel angle can be changed to make
good quality welds in all positions. Jointed arm robots also
allow the arc to weld in areas that are difficult to reach.
• ARC WELDING ROBOT
• Arc welding robot is one of the most common function in
industry today.
• During this process electricity jumps from an electrode guided
through the `ream, to the metal product. This electric are
generates into heat, enough to melt and metal at the joint.
• Other times the rod or wire is composed to become part of
weld during the short time that industrial welding robot have
been in use, and the joint arm or revolute type has become
most popular
• The robot is equipped with a welding rod and the required
power source to provide the electric current for the operation.
• The workcell controller is used to coordinate the robot motion
and any other activity in the cell.
• The cell controller must coordinate the speed and path of the
robot with the operation of the parts manipulator and the
welding parameters such as wire feed rate and power level.
