Extent of The Invasion Potential of A Secondary Forest Inside Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve

The document describes a study that aims to assess the extent of invasion of Swietennia macrophylla (Mahogany) in a secondary forest near a Mahogany plantation. Specifically, it will determine regeneration of mahogany within and away from mother trees, and assess the dispersal radius of regenerants and leaf litter. Plots will be established around four large mahogany trees to measure saplings <20cm dbh and poles <10cm dbh. Abundance, density, frequency and biodiversity will be calculated and compared between plots at different distances from the mother trees. Leaf litter, light and rainfall will also be analyzed in relation to regeneration patterns.

Extent of the Invasion Potential of

Swietennia macrophylla Plantation on

a Secondary Forest inside Mt. Makiling
Forest Reserve
Objectives:

Generally, the objective of the study is to assess the extent of

invasion of the species Swietennia macrophylla (Mahogany) in the
boundary of a Mahogany Plantation Specifically, it aims to:

• To determine the regeneration within and away from the mother

trees of mahogany in a mahogany plantation ; and

• To assess the dispersal radius of regenerants and leaf litter

matting of the alleged bio-invasive tree species.
Methodology:

Study shall be conducted at the Permanent Field Laboratory PFLA 3,

MFR,
•Purposive sampling shall be done by identifying four mahogany
with biggest DBH and designated as mother tree.
• plots shall be established in a northeastern and southwestern
directions of mother trees. Northeast and southwest of mother
trees are the directions of wind when seeds are ready to be
disseminated.
• plots shall have dimensions of 10m x 10m.
• All saplings (<20cm dbh) inside the plot shall be identified and
listed
• Inside the main plot, a 5m x 5m sub-plot shall be established for all
the poles (<10 cm dbh).
• Abundance, and Biodiversity values shall be computed and
assessed using the Fernando Biodiversity Scale (1998)
Table 1: The Fernando Biodiversity Scale (1998)

analyzed relating it to the number of
regenarants present, their density and their
abundance.
• The results of the assessment of the plots
shall be compared between and among the
distances covered.
