Top ten places to visit in Greece

• Top ten places to visit in Greece presented

below give you great ideas for your next
holiday destination. Each of the ten
suggestions is interesting and equally worth
visiting. So don’t wait, check out my ideas and
run to the nearest travel office to book the
holidays of your dreams in sunny Greece!
1. Athens
• Athens is the capital of Greece. It was in this
city that famous philosophers,
mathematicians, politicians and other
classical Greek intellectuals lived and created
their great work. No wonder that Athens is
regarded as a cradle of Western civilization
and democracy.
Modern city of Athens has a lot to offer to
international tourists. It is the political,
cultural, and economic center of Greece and
it houses the greatest remains of the
classical world. Among the most interesting
places for sightseeing are the following:
• -Acropolis with the great Parthenon
-Acropolis museum
-Plaka with Roman Agora
-The temple of Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch
-Monastiraki Flea Market
-National Archaeological Museum
2. Meteora

• Meteora means “suspended rocks” and it

describes a group of large rock pillars made
of sandstone located near Kalambaka.
The same name describes also a complex of
monasteries built on the top of them. There
are 24 monasteries out of which only six are
currently in use.
Those amazing buildings make an impression
even on a most picky tourist, while a view
from the top can take your breath away. In
the past, visitors had to climb to monasteries
on a ladder attached to the rocks and the
supplies were hauled up on the ropes. Today,
each monastery has got stairs curved into
rocks or bridges which makes visiting them
much easier. Also the supplies are delivered
through mini lifts.
3. Kastoria

• Kastoria is a city in the north-west

of Greece at the lake Orestiada
(or Kastoria). The city is well
known for its fur industry and it
doesn’t bear any resemblance to
a regular Greek city, due to its
purely north European elements.
The temperature resembles the
one of a central Europe, dropping
down to few degrees below zero
at winter time.
The best time of the year to visit
Kastoria is autumn. A walk in the
park by a lake, among colorful
leaves is an amazing experience.
4. Monemvasia

• Monemvasia is a town in Laconia,

situated in a small peninsula in
Peloponnese. The peninsula is
connected to the mainland
Greece through a short 200
meters long causeway. In the
medieval times the town had a
role of a powerful fortress. Its
name comes from words moni
emvasis which means one
entrance for you enter it only
through one gate. The town is
divided into the Upper Town with
its picturesque abysses and a
Lower Part located on the sea
coast.
5. Efafonisos

• Whoever once gets to

Elafonisos, he will never
forget the light blue
color of the sea, sandy
beaches and marvelous
food at local taverns is
the main port.
6. Santorini

• Santorini is the member of the

Cyclades group of islands on
the Aegean Sea. In reality the
island constitutes the top of
the immersed in the sea active
volcano. Santorini enchants
tourists with the contrasts of
white houses with black
volcanic slopes in the
background. The severity of
landscapes, magnificent
panoramas, multicolored
beaches formed by lava, and
deep blue sea create a picture
of impressive beauty.
7. Paksos and Antipaksos

• Two twin islands on the

archipelago of the
Ionian Sea with crystal
clear waters are ideal
destination for all those
who long for peaceful
holidays, away from
hordes of tourists, noise
and traffic.
8. Crete

• Crete, especially its west part with

the best beaches of Balos, Elafonisi,
and wonderfull Chania. However the
truth is that all Crete is marvelous.
Rethymno offers rich nightlife with
variety of cafeterias and clubs,
Heraklion houses the second biggest
Archeological Museum in Greece. In
Matala you will find mini caves in
which hippies created their houses
at the end of the 60′s. In Spinalonga
you can explore the ruins of the old
lepper colony. Nevertheless, If you
are planning holidays in Crete, make
sure you rent a car and explore as
much of this island as possilbe.
9. Leukada

• Leukada is yet another

island located on the
Ionian Sea. Its famous
beaches of Porto
Katsiki, Agios Nikitas,
Pefkoulia, Milos bay,
Vassiliki, Mikros Gialos
and Kathisma can surely
compete with their
Caribbean counterparts.
10. Mykonos
• Mykonos may be the
one of the best known
Greek islands, especially
among its younger
tourists due to its
cosmopolitan character
and well developed
recreational network of
hotels, restaurants, and
clubs.
