INTRODUCTION

 Amritsar is very rich in its heritage and culture. Its narrow streets and corners brim
with traditional offerings.
 It is interesting to explore the streets of this city with local guides, since the chance of
missing out on its subtle nuances is otherwise likely.
 The heritage walk is thus designed as a guided tour of the mysterious streets of the
city that have witnesses the four century old history of Amritsar.
 It gives an opportunity to explore Akhara Bungas, Hattis, Havelis and Katras that
define this beautiful city.
CONNECTIVITY
 Distance : by rail 199 km & by road 203 km
 2 ways to go their :
1. By rail- one can reach Amritsar from Jammu by travelling in a train. Jammu to
Amritsar train takes approximately 4 h 00 m. You can catch a train from Jammu and
get down at Amritsar. The price of the train ticket is approximately Rs. 122.
2. By bus- ravelling in a bus is one of the ways to reach Amritsar from Jammu. The
total journey between Jammu & Amritsar takes around 4 h 39 m in a bus. The bus
ticket price for the journey is approximately Rs.374.

JALLIANWALA BAGH
 Jallianwala Bagh is a historic garden and ‘memorial of national importance’
in Amritsar, India, preserved in the memory of those wounded and killed in
the Jallianwala Bagh that occurred on the site on the festival of Vaisakhi, 13
April 1919.
 Brigadier General Reginald Dyer ordered troops of british Indian amry to
fire their rifles into a crowd of unarmed Indian civilians in Jallianwala
Bagh, Amritsar, Punjab, killing at least 400 people including men and
women. Over 1000 people were injured.

GOLDEN TEMPLE
 The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, meaning "abode of God"
or Darbār Sahib, meaning "exalted court is a Gurudwara located in the city
of Amritsar, Punjab, India. It is the holiest Gurdwara and the most important
pilgrimage site of Sikhism.
 The Harmandir Sahib is an open house of worship for all men and women, from all
walks of life and faith. It has a square plan with four entrances, has a
circumambulation path around the pool.
 The Golden Temple's architecture reflects different architectural practices prevalent in
the Indian subcontinent, as various iterations of temple were rebuilt and restored. The
Temple is described by Ian Kerr, and other scholars, as a mixture of the Indo-Islamic
Mughal and the Hindu Rajput architecture
 The Golden Temple complex originally was open and had numerous trees around the
pool. It is now a walled, two storey courtyard with four entrances, that preserve three
Ber trees (jujube).

 Timing – 9 AM to 10 PM
 The  Golden Temple Market has an exhaustive collection of phulkari dupattas, and
suits that come with it for women. The other things that are extensively stocked up
and available here are the local spices, also known as "warian," Sikh symbols of
immense religious and spiritual importance - swords, daggers, karas (metallic
bangles).
 It is also one of the most vibrant and exciting part of the city.

1. Phulkari- Dupatta with beautiful bright embroidery work.

2. Punjabi Jutti- Traditional footwear usually made up of leather.
3. Punjabi Suit- A three-piece Punjabi ethnic outfit.
4. Paranda- A hair accessory used in braiding.
5. Kaleere- An accessory worn by Punjabi bride in her hands during a wedding
ceremony
6. Papad – Round shaped thin wafers eaten as a snack.
7. Wadiyan- Nuggets made with lentils and spices, used in curries and gravies.
8. Chooda- Set of bangles worn by Punjabi brides.
9. Jewelry- Precious and imitation jewelry including earrings, necklaces, bangles,
anklets, etc.
10. Turban- A long piece of cloth worn as headgear by Sikh men
11. Pakkhi- A hand-held fan usually made up of wood and fabric
12. Pickle- Lime, Mango, Chilly, Ginger, Garlic and many more preserved in vinegar,
oil, etc.
13. Jaggery- A better alternative than refined sugar to add sweetness to your food
14. Spiritual items- Sikh religious texts (Gutka), Kada, Kripan, Kangha (wooden comb),
Khanda (Sikh Emblem)
