B. F. Skinner's Reinforcement Theory of Motivation'

B.F. Skinner's Reinforcement Theory of Motivation proposes that worker behavior is regulated by rewards. It focuses on behavior rather than personality. The theory recognizes that positive behavior is reinforced by rewards, while negative behavior is weakened by punishment. If there is no reward or punishment, behavior fades. Reinforcement can come in various forms, including social, tangible, and activity rewards. The theory was applied to organizational settings to increase desired workplace behaviors through a system of behavioral consequences.

B. F. Skinner’s
‘Reinforcement Theory
of Motivation’
Introduction
was published by American social
philosopher, psychologist and
is one of the theories focusing is based on the principles
behaviorist Burrhus Frederic
on human motivation. of causality and
Skinner in 1957
knowledge that a worker’s
behavior is regulated by
the type of reward

2
The theory does not assess personality, but focuses
on behavior and recognizes three basic rules of
consequences:
✓ Reward for positive behavior reinforces positive
behavior
✓ Punishment for negative behavior weakens negative
behavior
✓ If there is no reward or punishment, behavior is
fading
About the Reinforcement Theory:

 Reinforcement, “is a term in operant conditioning and Behavior analysis for
process of increasing the rate or probability of a behavior in the form of
response by delivery either immediately or shortly after performing the
behavior.
 highlights the state of mind of each person, that is; his emotion and feeling.

Reinforcement Theory’s Approaches:
▰ Positive reinforcement
▰ Negative reinforcement
▰ Punishment
▰ Extinction

7
Reinforcement can be affected by various
factors, including the following:

 Satiation -degree of need

 Immediacy -time elapsed between the

desired behavior and the reinforcement

 Size -magnitude of a reward or punishment

8
Different types of reinforcement:

✓ Social Reinforcement
✓ Token Reinforcement

 Tangible Reinforcement

✓ Activity Reinforcers

Reinforcement Theory applied to
10
Organizational Settings
A behavioral modification program
consists of four steps:

➢ Specifying the desired behavior as objectively as possible.

➢ Measuring the current incidence of desired behavior.
➢ Providing behavioral consequences that reinforce desired
behavior.
➢ Determining the effectiveness of the program by systematically
assessing behavioral change.
