Fashion Evolution and Iconic Designers

Dress to express yourself, not to impress others. Fashion is a form of nonverbal communication that indicates social information through clothing, accessories, hairstyles and more. Fashion evolves over time and represents the accepted styles of a given period. In the 20th century, fashion changed dramatically from elaborate 1900s styles to minimal 1930s sportswear to iconic 1950s silhouettes. Famous designers like Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera, Stella McCartney and Ralph Lauren have shaped fashion over the decades with their distinctive brands.

DRESS TO EXPRESS NOT TO IMPRESS

Profesor:
Elev:
For centuries individuals or societies have used clothes and other
body adornment as a form of nonverbal communication to
indicate occupation, rank, gender, sexual availability, locality,
class, wealth and group affiliation. Fashion is a form of free
speech. It not only embraces clothing, but also accessories,
hairstyles, beauty and body art. What we wear and how and
when we wear it, provides others with a shorthand to subtly
read the surface of a social situation.

But fashion is not something that exists in dresses

only.Fashion is in the sky,in the street, fashion has to do with
ideas, the way we live, what is happening.
WHAT IS FASHION?

•Fashion is the accepted day to day way of

dressing at a given time. If you see everyone
wearing the same color or style when they
have not been the trend before, such is "in-
fashion."
•Fashion is the total outlook of an individual
of today and only for today. Through fashion
evolves and some styles come back, it only
applys for "now". Even the retro fashion is
never the same. Never has and never will.
Evolution of Fashion
• Who hasn’t heard something
about the most representative
eras of fashion, like 1950’s,
hippie’s age, disco fever, or
grunge? All these ideologies
have made an important
change through the time.
• There is a great evolution
through the fashion of the
1900’s to the 1990’s and it
involves different ideologies,
dress trends, shoes and
hairstyles. I’m going to
mention only the most
representative eras of fashion.

At the beginning of 20th century
fashion was incredibly
extravagant, elaborate, ornated.
• During the 1910’s the
fashionable silhouette became
much more lithe, fluid and soft. 1900’s 1910’s
• During the 1920’s corsets were
abandoned and women borrowed
their clothes from the male
wardrobe and chose to dress like
boys.
• During the 1930’s sportswear
became fashionable.
