Characteristics of
Recreation
In line of demarcation between recreational and non recreational activities
is not rigid. Some forms of recreation can be combined with work , making
them more enjoyable and activities that are generally thought of as
recreational maybe boresome and even drudgery to some people.

This is action as distinguished from rest and there is an exertion of
power and forces not always visible externally.
2. Recreation is determined has no single form
Recreational activities include a variety of leisure pursuits and may
found in various setting. Its flexibility gives depths to recreation

The interest, motives and values of individual determine the kind of
recreation an individual is engaged in.

4. Recreation occurs in unobligated time.
Eating, sleeping, body care and work are activities for existence and
subsistence. Recreation pursuits are done during leisure.
5. Recreation is voluntarily participated.
The individual has a complete freedom to choose the activity or
activities he/she wished to participate in or watch.
6. Recreation is universally sought and practices.
Without recreation life becomes unbearable and it is never satisfying
and balanced.

7. Recreation has by-products.
Rewards in terms of personal development, intellectual, physical and social
growth, better health and improved citizenship.
8. Recreation gives direct satisfaction.
The main objectives of recreation is enjoyment. Activities which are
pleasant give joy and direct satisfaction.
All these characteristics do not restrict the scope of recreation for any
individual. Wholesome and pleasant activities are determined by
individual’s interest, abilities and sense of values.
