FILIPINOLOGY
Spanish: Filipinología,
Tagalog: Pilipinolohiya
Filipinology or Philippineology or more
formally known as Philippine studies refers
to: "the study of the Philippines and its
people".
FILIPINOLOGY
WHAT IS IT?
It encompasses the study of Philippine
history, Philippine culture, Philippine
languages, Philippine society,
Philippine life, Philippine psyche or
Philippine psychology, Philippine
politics, and Philippine government.
FILIPINOLOGY
The approaches or perspectives of Philippine
Studies could be theoretical, interdisciplinary,
comparative, transnational, and global.
Filipinology was developed in the University
of the Philippines Diliman and had become
part of curricula in some colleges and
universities inside and outside the Philippines.
PURPOSE
LEARNING GOALS OF
FILIPINOLOGY INCLUDE
comprehension, appreciation, and
critical evaluation of the Philippines

THROUGH
Philippine History, contemporary issues in
Philippine community, and Philippine
Humanities such as Filipino philosophy,
Filipino music, Filipino art, Philippine
literature, and Philippine dance
PURPOSE
THE INCORPORATION OF PHILIPPINE
HUMANITIES THROUGH
literary readings, listening to musical recordings,
film viewings, and field trips provide development
of cultural acceptance and aesthetic sense.
PHILIPPINE STUDIES
EXTEND to connecting contributions of persons of
Filipino descent to new settings and
culture (such as Overseas Filipinos to other
countries). Apart from providing education
and awareness about the Philippines,
Filipinology aims to make students of
Philippine Studies aware of Filipino ethnic
identity by experiencing Philippine
culture.
FILIPINOLOGISTS
Experts on Filipinology or Philippineology are called filipinologists or
philippineologists
(Spanish: Filipinologista) (Tagalog: Pilipinolohista);
literally “experts in Philippine culture”. According to Rosa M. Vallejo the
"foremost non-Filipino filipinologist" is the Spaniard bibliographer
Wenceslao Emilio Retana y Gamboa.

Other prominent foreign filipinologists are William Henry
Scott, H. Brett Melendy Ferdinand Blumentritt, and A.V.
Hartendorp. Among the prominent Russian filipinologists

(May 30, 1924 – April 19, 2008) was a prominent American historian,
writer, researcher, publisher, autobiographer, dean, history professor,
and filipinologist. Melendy was a professor and administrator at the San
José State University in California and the University of Hawaiʻi. As a
professor, he taught about the history of California and United States
history. He was the first chairman of the history department of San José
State University. He was a life member of the American Historical
Association.
H. Brett Melendy is an anthropologist and professor who
has conducted extensive research on Filipino culture and
society. He is known for his work on the Tagbanwa
people of Palawan and the "Manobo" communities of
Mindanao. His research has focused on the social
organization, kinship systems, and cultural practices of
these indigenous groups. Melendy has also written about
the impact of colonialism and globalization on Filipino
communities

anthropologist known for his extensive research on
Philippine history and culture. He specialized in the
study of pre-colonial Philippines, particularly the
indigenous cultures and societies before Spanish

FERDINAND BLUMENTRITT
Ferdinand Blumentritt was an Austrian scholar and ethnographer
known for his contributions to the study of Philippine culture and
history. He was a close friend and correspondent of Jose Rizal, the
national hero of the Philippines, and they exchanged numerous
letters discussing various topics related to Philippine society,
language, and culture. Blumentritt's works provide valuable
insights into the Philippines during the late 19th and early 20th
centuries, particularly on topics such as language, folklore, and
customs.

Abraham Van Heyningen Hartendorp (1893–1975), commonly known
as A.V.H. Hartendorp or A.V. Hartendorp, was an American writer,
editor, Thomasite, and Filipinologist. He was the founder and publisher
of the Philippine Magazine, a magazine formerly known as Philippine
Education Magazine when it was still a publication intended for public
school teachers in 1904. When Hantendorp bought the magazine in
1924, he officially changed its name into Philippine Magazine and
became the "most prestigious outlet" for aspiring writers in the
Philippines.

Russian orientalist, linguist,
lexicographer, and translator.

Igor Podberezsky was a citizen of Russia and a leading
research fellow at the Institute of World Economy and
International Relations, Russian Academy of
Sciences.On June 3, 2009 President Gloria Macapagal-
Arroyo on a visit to Moscow, awarded the Presidential
Medal of Merit to Igor V. Podberezsky, a citizen of
Russia, D.Sc. (Philology), and a leading research fellow

at the Institute of World Economy and International
Relations, Russian Academy of Sciences.
PUBLICATION
Publications dealing with Filipinology
seek to reach specialist and non-specialist
audience from and outside the Philippines.
Among such Philippine Studies literature
is the quarterly journal Philippine Studies:
Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
published by the Ateneo de Manila
University.
PUBLICATION
Founded in 1953, the journal serves as a
“forum” for disseminating many
aspects of life in the Philippines
through research in history, humanities
and social sciences, “friendly and
constructive debate”, and the expression
of scholarly views.
PUBLICATION
Another publication is the book written by
Remigio E. Agpalo entitled Adventures in
Political Science. With an introduction
written by Zeus A. Salazar, Agpalo’s book
is a “major contribution” to Filipinology
that covers important areas of political
science in the Philippines,
