LESSON OBJECTIVES:

at the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

1. revisit the history of the ASEAN;
2. explain ASEAN integration; and
3. discuss the ASEAN Economic and Socio-
Cultural Blueprint.
THE ASEAN INTEGRATION
• ASEAN - Association of Southeast
Asian Nations; a regional cooperation
of the Southeast Asia.
• Integration - establishment of formal
processes toward collaboration for
shared economic and sociocultural
goals.
THE ASEAN INTEGRATION
"The fragmented economies of Southeast
Asia," he said, "(with) each country
pursuing its own limited objectives and
dissipating its meager resources in the
overlapping or even conflicting endeavors
of sister states carry the seeds of weakness
in their incapacity for growth and their self-
perpetuating dependence on the advanced,
industrial nations:
THE ASEAN INTEGRATION
ASEAN, therefore, could marshal the still
untapped potentials of this rich region
through more substantial united action."

—Narciso Ramon, previous Philippine

Secretary of Foreign Affairs and one of
the five founding fathers of ASEAN
THE ASEAN INTEGRATION
• 1960s, there was already an emerging
organization among Philippines,
Thailand, and the Republic of Malaya
in what was called the Association of
Southeast Asia (ASA).
• It was established in July 31, 1961 by
Thanat Khoman (Thailand), Felixberto
Serrano (Philippines), and Tunku
Abdull Raman (Malaya).
THE ASEAN INTEGRATION
• in 1963, another confederation was
formed, convened by then President
Diosdado Macapagal, This was referred to
as MAPHILINDO (Great Malayan
Confederation), involving Malaysia,
Philippines, and Indonesia.
THE ASEAN INTEGRATION
• August 8, 1967, these foreign ministers
sat down in Bangkok, Thailand and
signed the ASEAN Declaration.
• Founding Fathers of ASEAN, were
Adam Malik (Indonesia), Narciso R.
Ramos (Philippines), Tun Abdul Razak
(Malaysia),S. Rajaratnam (Singapore),
and Thanat Khoman (Thailand).
THE ASEAN INTEGRATION
• What really is integration and what is
ASEAN integration?

• In simpler terms, we can look at

integration as a pathway toward
unification in various sphere
-political, economic, and social.
THE ASEAN INTEGRATION
• ASEAN Integration, specifically within
the context of the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN),
refers to the ongoing process of
creating a more cohesive and
integrated community among its
member states.
THE ASEAN INTEGRATION
• A milestone in the journey toward
ASEAN integration was the
development and adoption of the
ASEAN Economic Blueprint (ASEAN
Secretariat, 2008) to advance the
vision of an ASEAN Economic
Community (AEC).
THE ASEAN INTEGRATION
The AEC has the following characteristics
(ASEAN Economic Blueprint, 2008, p. 5-26):

cooperations in the modern times. In
understanding regionalism in the context
of globalization, the case of ASEAN
serves as a good example on how states
of shared ideologies, culture, and goals
forge partnerships among one another to
enhance the probability of arriving at a
desirable end.
THE ASEAN INTEGRATION
• There are difficulties in maintaining
such cooperation especially in a world
where competition is the driving force
for action. At the end of the day, it is
also a question not only to the leaders
of the states but also to us, individual
citizens.
