Introduction
The Cardamom Act, 1965 was enacted by the Parliament . The Cardamom Act came into force in three stages .
1. Provisions regarding imposition of cess on export of cardamom with effect from 1-4-1966, 2. Provisions of the Act other than those relating to registration of estates with effect from 5-4-1966 and 3. Provision regarding registration of owners of cardamom estates with effect from 12-7-1966.
The Spices Board Act, 1986 was enacted by repealing the Cardamom Board Act and dissolving the Cardamom Board and the Spices Export Promotion Council.
The Spices Board Act came into effect from 26th February,1987 .
The Spices Board was established taking over the assets and
liabilities of the Cardamom Board and the Spices Export Promotion Council.
In the Schedule to the Spices Board Act enacted originally, there were only 26 items of spices, which was increased to 52 with effect from 8-11-1990.
Functions of Cardamom Board
Promote Co-operative efforts among growers of cardamom,
Proper returns to the growers of cardamom,
Provide financial or other assistance,
Regulate the sale of cardamom
Training,
Increase the consumption of cardamom,
Registration and Licensing,
Improve the marketing of Cardamom,
Collection of Statistics,
Publish statistics so collected or portions thereof or extracts there from,
Amenities and Incentives for workers,
Undertake Research Work.

Cardamom is the dried ripe fruit (capsules of cardamom plant) often referred as the Queen of Spices because of its very pleasant aroma and taste.
Cardamom is a perennial, herbaceous plant. Based on the nature of panicles, three varieties are recognized viz. Malabar with prostrate panicle, Mysore with erect panicle, and Vazhukka with semi erect panicle.
Indian cardamom is offered to the international markets in different grades: 'Alleppey Green Extra Bold' (AGEB), 'Alleppey Green Bold' (AGB) and 'Alleppey Green Superior' (AGS) are names that register instant appeal worldwide.
Uses
For the preparation of gahwa a strong cardamom coffee concoction which is a symbol for hospitality among Arabs. Cardamom oil and oleoresin Indian cardamom enjoys a premium preference in the Middle East, Japanese and Russians who relish it for its distinct enriching properties. Export
