HISTORICAL EVENTS OF THE JAPANESE
OCCUPATION
• Between the year of
1941-1945.
• Japanese Period
happened which is one
of the darkest events
in the Philippine
History.
• The Japanese assault in the country was meant to cut America’s
lines of communication in the Pacific as Japan sought to
expand their empire in the region.
In July 1941, the Philippines Reserve and Regular Forces joined forces with
the United States Army known as the United States Armed Forces in the
Far East (USAFFE) placed under the command of General MacArthur.
Douglas MacArthur was an American military leader who served as General
of the army for the United State, as well as a field marshal to the Philippine
Army. He’s job was to advise the Philippine government on defense matters,
and prepare the Philippine defense forces until the Philippines become
independent.
December 7, 1941 the Japanese Forces bombed Pearl Harbor in
Hawaii. The Japanese also launched offensive attacks in different
countries.
The invasion of the Philippines started on December 8, 1941 ten
hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
American aircraft were severely damaged in the initial Japanese
attack, lacking air cover, the American Asiatic Fleet in the
Philippines withdrew to Java on December 12, 1941.
On that tragic day, President Theodore Roosevelt asked
the US congress to declare war.
At the dawn of December 8, 1941(PH time) the Japanese
bombers under the command of General Masaharu
Homma conducted air attacks in various places of the
Philippines just like Batanes, Albay, Sulu and Quezon.
• In the afternoon of December 24, President Quezon
together with his family and War Cabinet moved to
Corregidor and two months later left for Australia,
enroute to the safety of the United State.
• Quezon transferred the Commonwealth republic in
Corregidor.
• Jose P. Laurel remain in Manila to negotiate with the
Japanese.
• Jorge Vargas declared as the Mayor of the city.
On December 26, General MacArthur
proclaimed Manila as open city.
January 02, 1942 the Japanese had captured
Manila, the capital of the Philippines. During
that time, the Northern and Southern armies of
the USSAFE were force to retreat to the
Bataan Peninsula.
Under direct orders from President Roosevelt, MacArthur left his
troops on the Bataan peninsula and landed with American forces,
in Australia on March 17.
For the next three months, as the United States began its entry into
World War II the combined U.S – Filipino army held out despite of
lack of naval and air support.
On April 9, 1942, with his forces crippled by starvation and disease,
U.S. Major General Edward King Jr. surrendered 75,000
American troops at Bataan. About 12,000 Americans and 63,000
Filipinos became prisoners of war.
DEATH MARCH
The bataan death march happened on
April 9, 1942 and it was remembered as
an absolute tragedy. The prisoners of
war were force to march through tropical
conditions enduring heat, humidity, and
rain without adequate medical care. They
suffered from starvation, the prisoners
who unable to make it through the march
were beaten, killed and sometimes
beheaded.
Three months after the start of the
battle of the Bataan, the Bataan death
march began forcing 60,000-80,000
Filipino and American prisoners of war
to march through the Philippines. The
route was about 65 miles long and
stretched from Mariveles, on the
southern end of the Bataan
Peninsula, to San Fernando.
• During the occupation of the Japanese in the Philippines, they ran
the Philippines with iron hand. They instilled fear declared martial
law.
• They imposed curfews, they ordered that anyone who opposes
them or even those who are just accused of going against the
Japanese were punished and killed.
• Singing of the national anthem and raising and raising of national
flag was prohibited, use of radio and transmitters as also
prohibited.
• Political parties, elections and public assemblies were put to a
halt. School, printing presses, telegraph, and radio stations were
closed down.

government between 1932 and 1945. It is the
largest case of government-sponsored human
trafficking and sexual slavery in modern
history.

PUPPET GOVERNMENT
• A Puppet State is a government that appears independent but is
actually controlled by another country.
• The Second Philippine Republic, officially known as the
Republic of the Philippines and also known as the Japanese-
sponsored Philippine Republic was a Japanese puppet state
established on October 14,1943.
• This government sought to legitimize Japanese occupation in the
country and promised independence for Filipino people but
Imperial government failed to commit to this pledge.

EDUCATION SYSTEM
• Schools were reopened in June 1942 with 30,000 students.
• Tagalog, Philippine History and Character Education were the
focus.
• Love for work and dignity for labor was emphasized.
• There was the spread elementary and vocational education.
• Nipponggo was used and the Japanese tried to stop the Filipino
people from using the English Language.

BATTLE OF MANILA
The battle for the liberation of Manila waged from February
3, to March 3, 1945, between Philippine and American
forces, and the imperial Japanese forces is widely considered
to be one of the greatest tragedies of the second world war.
One thousand men, women, and children perished.
The Japanese forced Filipino women and children to be
used as human shields into the front lines to protect
Japanese positions. Those who survived were then murdered
by the Japanese.
